I had several months ago made a comment on your channel about HAM and I got a reply that "when TSHTF no one will care about a license". For people just getting started, it's important to know that line of store is important. So if you can draw s straight line from you to the other person without obstructions, that is the best case scenario. This is where repeater come in. A line to a tall place can be seen by you and your friend and it repeats the communication between the two of you. But even if you don't have a repeater, you can often get higher, and with height comes better comms.

I'm a huge fan of the VHF-Low (48-50) band. Carries extremely well in the mountains. Almost empty and abandoned. You can get a frequency license if you like. Can be set up with crossband repeaters, to act as relays for your HTs. Can be done entirely solar. TYT TH-9800 can do it.

Using a shortwave radio and cheap computer/tablet, you can practice decoding messages (and pictures!) on the HF frequencies right now. Very simple! Your best source of information if things go sideways is going to be the digital modes on HF bands. Start with AMRRON. Full guides and re-occurring training. There's no license to listen!

We had a standard phone for a while at our house but the digital "noise" on the line was so bad (even with the filters) that we got rid of it. And we didn't even have DSL.

Haven't tested that but they've gotten rain and sweat on them without any issue. I have a uv9r pro on my plate carrier with a CAT antenna and some peltors and it works very well. I ditched my yaesu radios for these because yaesu is too locked down. You can actually unlock triband (1.25m) on the uv9r with chirp too if you do a bit of mild hacking and put an appropriate triband antenna on it. For squad comms I have to admit, 1.25m has its advantages.

⚠️ PLEASE Avoid Baofeng Chinesium CRAP! For a few extra bucks (no,, not the Motorola APX8000 etc. $8k radios we are issued in public safety), you can get DECENT handheld portable radios and mobile radios that can easily be used as base station radios. The TYT MD390 Plus is a compact portable radio that does analog (for FRS/GMRS &MURS etc) *AND* does DMR digital. The same with the AnyTone 878UV series portable. They BOTH come with INCLUDED AES-256 encryption!,!! (For a $100 buck radio to include AES-256 encryption is nuts!) I just upgraded my “friends + family” group of 22 Hytera radios (pricey, but most of us are volunteer firefighters, EMT’s or police officers and use them daily anyway. (Hytera PD982’s that average $800-1000 per radio) BUT… the AES 256 encryption license PER RADIO was $240. Just for the license to enable the encryption. Learn about radio comms. BEFORE you need them.

Also… please consider investing a few extra bucks in spare rechargeable lithium batteries ($20-30@) and a “battery eliminator” which replaces the battery with a device that looks identical to the battery , but has a coiled cord w/vehicle power plug (cigarette lighter plug) that will power the radio on 12 volts DC. Also .. invest in mobile/base radios for longer “reach” (VHF + UHF) and speak to local first responders or ham radio operators and get the frequencies used in your area and MAKE HARDCOPIES of everything. The Tech Prepper has a great KZbin channel as well. Also.. invest in a few steel garbage cans w/steel lids ($30 bucks at Home Depot) There are a few KZbin channels that instruct you how to use copper mesh and other tactics to seal up the can from outside RF - so an EMP pulse from a nuke weapon or directed energy weapon will not roast your precious electronics. We are definitely heading into terrible times. The government is NOT gonna be there to secure you or feed you. (They MIGHT “secure you”, but that will be the J6 kind of “securing”). God Bless and be safe.

Here is the problem tho.. So let's say there is a disaster, these folks grab their radios and start yelling into them that they need help or whatever and they go stomping right over an ARES or RACES net that is passing emergency traffic.. Please take the time to get licensed, learn how the radio operates, and use it! This way in case of an emergency you can be of help and not a hindrance.. 7 3

The FCC does enforce the Ham bands definitely, though not everyday and in many instances only involving widely noticed blatant violations. I'm always a big fan of those who advocate for proper licensing too. There's a ridiculous loophole in FCC regulations that states in a life threatening emergency, unlicensed broadcasts are allowed any band, any frequency for the sole purpose of summoning emergency assistance. OK fine but.. The last thing the ham bands need in a crisis are a bunch of unknowledgble, u licensed users screaming on Repeater subbands yelling, IS THIS THING WORKING? HELLLO?? It take a basic technician book and a weekend worth of study to pass a tech ticket license which is pretty simple.
