Middle-classed, slender and petite Jia Rao (Minissha Lamba) meets Gajner's recently widowed Vikram Aditya Singh Sesodia (Dino Morea), both fall in love, get married, and re-locate to live in his palace in Rajasthan. Jia finds out that everyone in the vicinity still believes that Vikram's first wife, Anamika (Koena Mitra), who allegedly met a sudden death, may still be alive, and actually witnesses an apparition in the palace grounds. She is not permitted to enter in to a certain section of the palace where Anamika had her residential quarters. However, she does manage to find her way there, and decides to follow in Anamika's lavish and sophisticated footsteps, invoking a sudden change in Vikram affections. Meanwhile local Police Inspector Pratap, none other than Vikram's brother-in-law, continues his investigation and collects evidence in order to arrest Vikram for Anamika's death.

The movie is based on the novel Rebecca. In the original novel as well, the lead male protagonist chooses to marry a very young, simple, naive, and plain looking girl as his 2nd wife. The idea here was that he wanted someone the complete opposite of the beautiful and sophisticated but eventually unfaithful first wife, Rebecca. Of course, this sort of idea doesn't fly in 2024.

the whole staff was so rude and disrespectful to her. The all kept on talking about his dead wife, and kept mentioning her as though she was still the real lady of the house. The second wife has no self respect and dignity. This is what happens when you marry someone who was previously married. He only mistakenly believed his dead wife was cheating on him which led him to hate her, and after finding out the truth, how will he feel about his current wife. As the current wife have some self respect and take your rightful place in the house.
