When the parts stop interacting with each other, the parts stay and the whole vanishes from sight and that is death (that is the dead parrot as he puts in the speech). That "whole" is the "atma" or the soul may be. And that is the crux of the idea that he is trying to explore in the Ship of Theseus which is brought out beautifully in the conversation of the stock broker with his assistant on his feeling regarding meeting others having organs donated by the same dead person from who he had his kidney. He says, "Purje mila kar hi aadmi banta hoga na? Kuch aur bhi hota hoga nahin to purje badalne se aadmi badal jaata" (Organs make a man eh! His assistant replies: Something else must be there apart from them otherwise a man would change after changing his organs). Anand Gandhi made the film to bring out this eternal query of whether there is a soul. - Trying to answer to all the confused trolls on this page.

These kind of talks are thoughts that plague my mind every other day. Being a hopeful, strongly opposing nihilism, I can definitely see where he's coming from. His intellect is extremely well maintained and deftly constructed. Ship of Theseus is definitely one of the greatest movies about exploration of the self and in itself, exploration of the human nature. Anant Gandhi is a filmmaker/stoic of herculean proportions and he's been making good documentaries of late. He was also the co-director of Tumbbad which I'm not a big fan of but I respect his vision greatly although I'm not the biggest fan of philosophical movies except that of Bergman, Bresson and Tarkovsky.

The Herring Gull Chick didn't go bizarre because of the color on the stick. The chick went bonkers trying to understand,if this is real or not.. There was a mismatch in the Visual Memory & the idea of another organism itself. We experience the same under incomprehensible situations.

I think the reason why he makes movies is that he is fascinated by the ability of these mediums to express so much in so little space and it's ability to showcase the culture and thus influence it. I know it's speculative. He at one point in the video talks about memes and culture but then digresses to philosophy of everything I guess. I hope he is better at filmmaking than public speaking

won't claim to have understood the talk entirely, but love the comparison of violence in movies with fat in junk food. Never thought of it that way. Evolutionarily we try to go for most energy dense food, which explains our obsession with junk food. Makes sense why people so mindlessly love energy dense media, which is a cacophony of violence, romance and sex.

his movie wants to talk about human conditioning n it's subjective propensity to define hope, happiness, pain n our hopeless efforts to control the outcome of our decisions. eg. the girl thinks getting eyes wud bring her bliss wherein she lost art in the process. Same with the monk who thought he knew for certain what was self realisation but then he thru his life realises dat there's still time to attain the ultimate truth. The guy who out of guilt tries to think what wud b good for the donor wherein the donor's bliss is completely controlled by his choice which is driven by various factors abt which the young man has no knowledge or control on it.

Matter after complex unconscious reactions formed life without any purpose and meaning, therefore all purpose has to be invented. Our ideas help us invent purpose and create our choices. These ideas evolve to be denser leading to memory of new data, thereby becoming concentrated memes which are snapshots of reality which are a new glimpse of reality better than old genetic information. He is Inducing Philosophy...if facts and Analogies were enough to Become physicist, I am Sure there are enough intelligent Men and Women on this earth today to fill that gap. They dont. A scientist isn't merely full of Analogies and Philosohocal understandings...it takes more to step into Science and Get yourself occupied with serious Research... Anand is rather, A descent storyteller...he has this Abaility to question on crucial topics, and hence create stories that Ask questions.... That's not something to be amazed about I think, every storyteller is Supposed to be atleast a fraction bit philosophical...or they are just presenting only stylised visual crap. Typically today's media Is so dumb and Mediocre is because no one thinks this certain way before putting their Work into worth.

No he will not. How will he sound pretentious then? It is commendable that he is very good understanding of what he is saying (I could understand that). But being a scientist by profession I feel he used some scientific terms from Chemistry and Physics (actually making no/or very little sense in the context he is talking) either thinking that listeners are fool or I am too bright. Knowledge brings humility and sorry to break your heart but: He sounds cocky!
@SamirPatnaik
@SamirPatnaik 10 жыл бұрын
Uday Modi Don't worry a tad. My heart is alright. :) It is brilliant that you could understand him. Very commendable. But i do not understand why do you find him pretentious(read cocky). Do you find him cocky because he started his monologue with "Life is not teleological" or he used the word "teleological" itself and such other registers which require a bit of erudition in western philosophy to understand? Perhaps the only jargon he used from Physics is "quantum probability" (any XII grader may claim the has heard of it) and from Chemistry is "chemical substrate" , I guess. If a person uses strong vocabulary to convey his deep insightful perspective, the person is not cocky, he has erudition. I am sure as you say this doesn't make sense to you. It didn't make sense to me as well when i saw it for the first time. But then I watched it twice and following it I watched his movie "Ship of Theseus", read his blog "Handbags and Lingo", watched more of his interviews and then saw this Ink Talk once again. It was enlightening. I got goosebumps. Everything he said was piercingly clear. I had missed things in there completely for i lacked context. His content is extremely information dense and has volumes of knowledge worth eons of years of evolution. His speech has not been dumbed down for low functioning members of our community, and fortunately so. It is unadulterated and pure with his lucid insights of our evolving life. Yes you can freely say that I am an elitist. I recommend you please do your research well, which I am sure you must be great at since you are a scientist by profession, before claiming another man's word as nonsense. But what astounds me is you say you can understand what he says and then claim what he says is nonsense. The only logical deduction I can infer from this is you can understand nonsense. If so, then brilliant! And in case you are wondering about my comment above - it was an sarcastic outcry mocking the pathetic comments below, born out of the ineptitude. Sorry, if i broke your heart. Have nice day and a good new year :D P.S. Dil pe mat lena, ye sab faltu ki baatein hein. Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish!

It is very impressive that he is very well red and have good understanding. I could understand whatever he meant and said. But he sounds very pretentious (read: cocky) because he is just throwing away terms (with specific definitions) left and right redundantly which is quite obscuring his point he is trying to make when it is supposed to make a clear concise point. Further, being a scientist myself, I feel offended by his "UV and radiation" use i think he doesn't understand or he is using those terms to sound pompous or thinks audience is a fool! It is quite surprising that he is a movie maker and expresses his thoughts and ideas through movie in a brilliant way but as an orator he is failing at his own purpose of expressing his idea clearly. Hail Mary!

+Uday Modi He's not speaking for us, he is speaking for himself , to understand things better, not that he already doesn't understand it, but being a thinker, he'd want more clarity . His 'expressions' ,'jargon' , 'pompous 'words are not pompous from his perspective. He sees huge meaning in them that would induce more spark and thinking. He already knows most of us would never understand. That should not stop him to express his ideas "his" way .Fair enough! He is not duty bound to make us understand everything.

+Natesh Subhedar Well in my little mind, I had an idea that talks are given to express and transmit ideas to a bigger audience (Never knew that stages are provided so that a person can talk to himself in front of people #sarcasm). And a good speaker is one who judges his audience and talks to them in their language. If he is doing it for himself then he doesn't belong to a stage to address an audience. A person is given the stage to express him/herself to people with as much accuracy (which is lacking in this guy), clarity and coherency as he/she can.

I wish he had used even 0.01% of the amount of time he wasted in his entire life on thinking about the 'cause-behind-matters' on thinking what people really like or even how to keep people entertained while you're paid to stand on stage to perform. His thoughts are deep, everyone at some point in their life thinks about these things. Why am I here? what is purpose of my life? etc. mechanisms of organisms in this ecosystem to respond and to store what learned and their eternal responsibility to carry forward this information about generation and causes behind it is very basic point. He just explained it in difficult and I would say rather faster English accent. His movies are excellent. I wish he could talk less and make more movies which expresses his level of consciousness more effectively.

This could be way more simpler He used way more techniqal terms to complicate it. If your msg is not propagated its a complete waste. Intelligence is in simplifying things not complicating it.

Sometimes people speak for themselves, perhaps to understand their own selves. His audience might not grasp everything but the way he articulated his thoughts is admirable. And I am sure, there are many people who actually are trying to decipher his words. His analogies might not be comprehensive to everybody, but at the end there's nothing actually makes complete sense even in our lives. The technical words you mentioned might me difficult for people but for others who really wanted to understand and had already tried to grapple questions such as these perhaps they could resonate with him.

Wtf? Did he make Ship of Theseus? I know we all suffer from the problem we are trying to solve but this is crazy levels of it. I want to ask him who he is speaking to? again the elite and educated? I am sure even they would prefer simpler words. May be these platforms expect people like him to come and impress the audience. I am sure they would have been pretty impressed by the film if they had seen it. If people were looking up to him, speaking in this style can discourage many from believing they can too do things differently. What about people who do not understand most of his words and the connections he is trying to make? Dude, your film spoke for you. You did not have to come and attempt giving a noble winning speech. OR his whole speech is sarcastic :D
