Bhante Anandajoti: The Vast Time Frame In Buddhist Cosmology

The subject of this short talk given at the Bodhilaṅkārāma temple in Taiping, Malaysia, on 16th August, 2023, is the vast amount of time that is needed to become a Sammāsambuddha; and the lesser times needed to become Chief Disciples and Foremost Disciples.

Beautiful video. Thank you very much. It's regrettable that the viewer doesn't have the opportunity to see the 28 Buddhas represented on the walls. I have some questions though: - Who are the 28 Buddhas? Where can I read about them? - What are the eight absorptions? - What are the five super powers? Thank you.

Dipankara (the 4th) Buddha confirmed Sumedha to be a future buddha, after four asankheyyas and one hundred thousand kappas. Gotham (the 28th) Buddha went to Kushinagar to attained Parinirvana. When Ananda asked Buddha why "Kushinagar", he said it all begun there! (meaning the time Dipankara had confirmed him being a future Buddha) if an eon is a time equal to the universe to be destroyed and re-created. Buddha's reasoning to choose Kushinagar would be invalid. There is a problem here??

Buddha Dīpaṅkara confirmed Sumedha as a Bodhisatta in Amaravatī, not Kusinagara. See: bit.ly/Buddhas-Bodhisatta. But in any case, in the way this is figured India and the other continents are recreated in each aeon, so it wouldn't be a problem anyway.
