Some errors in this Dhamma talk 1. This Venerable continuously refers to Light as the nimitta throughout his talk. He even goes onto discuss problems with the light and even predicts when this light appears. Very IMPORTANT: Light is NOT patibhaga nimitta. Explanation: In the Visuddhimagga it clearly states that a person cannot attain Jhana with objects that have individual essence (only exceptions are the 2nd and 4th arupa jhana and Nibbana). Light is another word for colour. Colour is ultimate reality and therefore has individual essence. Hence, this Venerable's statement is completely wrong. Please remember: absorption takes place with patibhaga nimitta. This is inherently bright, does not change, borne out perception and is a concept. It does not have a shape or colour, and cannot be seen with the eye. The Visuddhimagga states many type of patibhaga nimitta for anapanasati, but the yogi who reads this should understand these are not shapes or colors apprehendable by the eye. Please refer Visuddhimagga sections that describe patibhaga nimitta to get a clearer understanding. Remember Light is not Patibhaga Nimitta. Light is color. 2. 36:39 The Venerable says that if a person watches the breath effortlessly and continuously for 45 minutes, he will see the nimitta (which he thinks is the light). This is a dangerous statement because there can be many persons - example dvihetuka born individuals who can watch the breath continuously but cannot attain jhana (a dvihetuka person does not get patibhaga nimitta). Further, such times have not been stated in the Tipitaka 3. The Venerable is probably giving a time (of 45 min) for the light to appear because he is actually referring to the bright cittaja and tejo rupa kalapas that arise when meditating. These can arise soon, because of the meditating mind. But they should not be considered patibhaga nimitta. 4. 38:56 Again the Venerable gives advice about not using the eyes to see the light. PLEASE REFER TO above explanation point 1. The patibhaga nimitta cannot be apprehended by the eye. This is stated in the Visuddhimagga. Again, it seems that he is mixing up cittaja or tejo rupa kalapas with patibhaga nimitta. 5. 40:14 He is referring to tears coming out of the eye when the light hits the eye. Please understand above explanations with reference to patibhaga nimitta. 6. 41:42 He uses the word visualize. Please understand visualize does not mean create. A listener might misunderstand. If a person creates an object with the mind, he cannot use that for jhana. 7. 44:04 He refers to insect crawling, wave like sensations, etc. And he asks the yogi to remember these sensations when the breath disappears. The Visuddhimagga clearly states what to do when the breath disappears such as think about drowned man does not have breath, etc. Please refer to Visuddhimagga. We cannot write all here. 8. 45:01 refers to color, location of light will change. Patibhaga nimitta does not have color or location. It is a concept borne of perception. 9. 45:40 Patibhaga nimitta never changes. Light can change or a imagined object can change. Refer to Visuddhimagga and its sub-commentary to understand more about why a patibhaga nimitta does not change. Also another way to think = it is difficult to reach jhana with an object that changes so easily.
