Welcome back to another episode of "Anatomy of..." Today we're looking at the 2021 V8 Superutes prototype. Introduced in 2018 the Supertes is a support category to the Supercars - Australia's biggest racing series (equivalent to the American NASCAR series). With a chassis sourced from either Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger or Mazda BT50 the Superutes were originally powered by diesel engines but that's about to change. For 2021 the Superutes will be fitted with an LS3 V8 powerplant controlled by a Haltech ECU. We take a closer look at the development vehicle for the series to see what secrets lie behind those steel, factory panels.

I hate people that hate on LS's. There's a reason they're so popular. If you want to build a street car, cool. Put a weird engine it. Race cars though, need performance per pound and proven parts and reliability. If you hate the LS, go build your own unique car...

Scott, where I come from (New York), a Ute is someone under the age of 18... Questions: Will the ECU be sealed (or USB Blocked) by the officials? What fuel is being used? Is Bob really your uncle?
@cropduster95714 жыл бұрын
A youth is someone under 18, the term Ute comes from coupe utility. You folks call the pick ups or trucks

What oil do they use
@christianmgtow47444 жыл бұрын
I am wondering if you guys could Implement a throttle strategy for deceleration. I use this strategy on my work truck where in the case of deceleration, I cut injector power and hold the throttle to the floor to turn the engine into an air compressor. I know there is a debate over using High engine vacuum versus compressing air for engine diesel, but the benefit of compressing air is more cold air volume through the engine to cool it down and potentially less oil consumption. What do you guys think? I would like to unavailable input on the program for Full Throttle deceleration in a race mode where it cuts Fuel and the drive-by wire goes to 100% throttle.
@vaughnhaltech10694 жыл бұрын
Hi Christian, this would not be useful in a petrol engine especially for racing as petrol engines are controlled by how much air we allow in, not fuel as with a diesel. If your throttle was wide open and you then slightly touch the throttle mid corner, you would need to bring the throttle all the way down from 100% to a low throttle opening for long enough to see vaccum back at your MAP sensor prior to re-enabling the injectors otherwise you risk making the return to power too aggressive. Additionally, when you compress air it will get hotter so the cooling gains would be limited. Typically what we do in a race car is that we disable the decel cut on the fuel injectors and use the fuel to cool the engine when there is insufficient air for combustion. This is the strategy that is being employed on the ute, however one of the goals for making the ute look and sound good going around the circuit was to have flames coming out of the exhaust on decel. This required commanding a higher throttle opening than we normally would in order to keep some air passing through the engine. The down side of this made the engine continue to produce some amount of power and push forward instead of engine braking as much as you would normally see. After feedback from the driver we reduced the throttle opening under deceleration to a more comfortable level, while keeping as much as possible going through for a bit of a flame show. As with many parts of tuning, the solution for a particular vehicle is normally a set of compromises to find the best balance and behaviour for what the vehicle needs to do.
@christianmgtow47444 жыл бұрын
@@vaughnhaltech1069 yeah I knew it would be a touchy subject for racing applications. You would have to apply significant amount of timing retard while re-engaging normal throttle operation. Just throw the idea out there. I do use this strategy on a Spark engine by the way. What I have found out about compressing air is obviously there is a percentage of that compression Heat that is transferred to the engine parts but there is also a heat reduction when you uncompress it during a no fuel Powerstroke Nice to meet you Vaughn! keep up the good work
@christianmgtow47444 жыл бұрын
@@vaughnhaltech1069 if you want more flames, you could try advancing the timing a little more during closed throttle deceleration conditions. The higher the vacuum level in the combustion chamber will create such a low ionization voltage at the spark plug gap that there's borderline enough heat there to light air fuel creating intermittent misfires

Love the technical stuff guys and would be awesome for a street conversion but V8 racing and running the same gear in all the vehicles is boring as hell. Miss the days of manufacturers putting their best into a product and showing off why they are better, if you want to see driver Vs driver watch F1 cause all this is doing is taking away the ingenuity that use to be apart of racing.
