Thank you Suzie Orman for touching lives. Everyone can do this. Educating families is the key and letting them know what they have and what they can do. Money is a universal language and I bet it is an issue everyone has to deal with. So glad to be in this job & industry.

I'm saying this coz I migrated in US when I was already an adult. Like many kababayan's, I worked hard for many years as an employee (in Makati, QC, Subic, etc), went to Riyadh as OFW, now in US. We don't need foreign financial advisors to teach us that we should all work hard -it's baisc, I learned this long time ago from my great grandpa. To our folks in PI, stop pitting yourself against each other, let's work together and work hard. Together, Pinoys can be great!

I concur with Suze. Philippines needs to 'change" for the better... before its becomes too late too little to do so. Philippines can be great, if everyone recognize that they CAN. The families back home needs innovate to stand on their own, and build the country, while their OSW counterparts learn to build their assets for the FUTURE, rather than sending back every penny and waste it away. (* 2 cents worth - experience shared from close ones)

I agree w/ you and you have to understand, the Philippines is not yet at that level of consciousness when it comes to discrimination which you could probably have in advance nation such as the U.S. The Philippines is still developing what would you expect?

Not all overseas Filipino worker sends EVERY penny back home, but if they're the head of the family and they left their wife/husband and children behind, they will have to send the majority of it. Some though would send a portion of their earnings on a regular basis and on top of that, they'll be the savior when someone gets sick. The rest of their earnings are spent in showing off, "share your blessings" (balato), and "pasalubong" when they arrive wherein fact they got nothing saved up.

The reason is the scarcity of the job no matter how would you like to think of it. Companies post any requirement they want and it's not illegal. What is illegal is to fire someone because of a trifling reason. Pleasing personality is subjective. Having just an ok face and being friendly are considered pleasing. But as I have mentioned, once you're hired, your job is secured. If you pass 6 mos, you're permanent employee unless it's a contract.

Educational background is a given. That's not a subjective issue unlike age. I am specifically talking about age discrimination and this implied "pleasing personality", which I found not in service or hospitality jobs but in a pharmaceutical position. The ad was seeking for a pharmacist and blatantly stated "no applicants above 30". I'm not buying that excuse of job scarcity. The same can be said currently in California, but you don't see "apply only if you are below 40 and MUST BE SINGLE"

It depends on what kind of job. Call centers doesn't have that kind of discrimination as long as you can speak English quite well. It's just not so many jobs are available that's why the "standards are high" but if businesses are in dire need of workers, they won't be that picky. McDonalds crew must be at least in 2nd year in college. The only thing I like about the Philippines though is that no ones going to fire you just because your boss had a bad hair day or you just look too hot for the job

I am not trying to defend it all I am just saying is everybody here understands the game of job application. And yes, I agree with co-dependency. I have to say though that not everybody sends ALL THEIR EARNINGS unless they're the husband/wife who left their entire family behind but people help family members on a regular basis depending on situation. Mandatory retirement, but they can still work part time. I have quite a few professors in college that are retired but working part time.

See you reinforced my point. The companies there right now can do whatever they want. And that is where the state should step in and level the playing field. You do not have to defend your native country to a fault, that is condescending and only proves Suze's point on co-dependency. Also, did you catch the part where they discussed about the Philippines having a MANDATORY retirement age at 60-65? So my mom can no longer work even though she is still capable. A 60 yr old pharmacist IS capable

See how blessed people are in the US? That's the way it goes in the Philippines and somehow people can still find a way to survive. So sometimes this helping thing isn't that just as simple as "harassing" a well off relative. It's just it's very tough. Also in job applications, If they happen to know someone from a company then you can hit up for some recommendation. There's always a way and people there can find one. Trust me. ha ha ha

I am not saying it is right but companies can do whatever they want. Pregnant woman will take a leave of absence for 2-3 mos. That's a long time. If they refused that pregnant woman, I'm sure she will understand. It will not be an issue. Besides it's not all about pregnancy why she's refused. It could be the qualification itself and maybe the job will not be good for her pregnancy. If the company likes her and be willing to wait, then that's great.

All true but all basic finance101. People just need to be reminded. Also, she's talking on an American mindset. I think she needs to stay in the Phils longer to learn more. I am in America and don't send money in the Phils, except for extreme emergencies/hospitalizations. However, we always have to balance, these advisors just talk on their own mindset - nothing new.

Working part-time is NOT EQUAL. Please tell me you are not a Republican, please oh please. Do you not picture your own mother, had she been a single working mom who was pregnant with you that time and needed to earn money and got turned down in every job just because she is a woman, and pregnant? How is that just, fair, equal? Maternity and paternity rights? Tell me how a pharmacist ad saying "Must be single, between 21-35 y/o" is right? How does age or civil status determine JOB SKILLS?
