I’m adopted and found my bio dad thru AncestryDNA using both genealogy and DNA matching. Through DNA cousins I was able to tie two branches together to narrow my search to two men. A first cousin and Uncle tested which proved the other guy was my dad. I’ve tested on all the sites.

@@TommyGrimes it took me and my cousin 18 months to figure it out. Turns out that my paternal grandmother was adopted which added to the difficulty. I found her adoption letter in a tree that showed her dad as my GGF. I thought it was a mistake and never clicked on her profile. Once I did I saw the adoption letter. The tree belonged to my 1st cousin who hadn’t tested yet. Once her and her dad tested we knew for sure who my bio dad was.

Love your video.. I did the 23andme just for fun and then decided to get one for my dad. Huge mistake... results!! He is not my dad. He doesn't know it yet, I'm dying. Couldn't find any close match, so I ordered a kit from Ancestry. Wish me luck 🙏😔

@Grumpy From Fresno No, not at all. I did both Ancestry and 23&Me and found relatives on both. Most were on one, but not the other. I found the most via Ancestry (it's the largest database) but I also found some on 23&Me (the 2nd largest data base). I'm sure if I did Heritage DNA, I'd probably find even more. I dont think anyone of them is the end all be all. I think it boils down to just how much do you want to spend VS how many more people do you want to find or confirm?

My dad was also adopted. His bio mom had ran around and got pregnant. Never knew bio fam. He too became a pastor. I have two older sisters. He was diagnosed with ALS and dementia. I'm Latina so I'm looking for a test that can give me more exact information on my indigenous roots. I don't want a test that tells me I'm from South America, I already know that, but it'd be awesome if I knew what ethnicity from there I got DNA from. I'm sure it's really hard because these kits aren't cheap and I doubt many indigenous people would take these tests, so their gene pool for it will be very very limited. However, I think that maybe with time they'll have bigger databases from more diverse backgrounds and then I will be able to find what I'm looking for.

Okay so it’s called mylivingdna, once you take the ancestry or 23 and me test just upload your results to mylivingdna and they break it all the way down. I’m actually African American but I wanted to know my specific ethnic groups from Africa and not just the country, and it only took them like a day to a day in a half to send my information back!!

I dont know how to explain it, but I always felt so naturally drawn to the Jewish people, even though I too was born and raised a Christian. I took a Ancestry test to see if my father was really the person I was told was my father. When I took the test I was surprised and so was my mother. She then admitted she was raped and I also found a half brother that was also looking for his parents. He was surprised to have found me and also he knew he was given for adoption because his mother was also raped. I believe that I have found my father but is deceased. I was able to contact one of his sons and he was willing to pass the Ancestry test. He is waiting for the result which is said that he will receive pretty soon.

I have taken two test Ancestry and 23andme. While both offer some good things, I would say Ancestry wins. Some of the reasons this video points out but also with Ancestry, they have a feature called Thrulines which can help you to determine connections up to 5th great grand parents and people who share the common ancestors... if they have done a DNA test and providing that family trees are correct. I find that 90% or more of the time, it has been correct. Sometimes the relationships are off with a distant cousin and sometimes totally off. but again it's mostly correct from my investigation. Ancestry is great for genealogy whereas if you just want to see your ethnicity and health report than 23andme is fine. Also, I find Ancestry people are generally more hardcore into genealogy so they are way more likely to respond. The only thing that I don't like about Ancestry is that their subscriptions are way to expensive; if they were half expensive, I would buy one.

I did connect with a first cousin on her side through 23andMe, but he was my only close match. I recently sent in a test to AncestryDNA to see if I can find anymore close DNA matches. I’m in the same position as you. My mom was also adopted and she was told she was Korean which is where she was adopted from. She took the DNA test and it showed she’s actually 0% Korean but in fact is 50% Chinese, 25% Japanese, 25% European mixes. It now has me interested if 23andMe or AncestrySNA is more accurate? @@giulliap8515 Exactly! I know my family is mostly Armenian, but we escaped genocide and many of my family members fled to Western Europe, the US and the Middle East. So when I got my results, all it showed me was Turkey and the Caucasus and the Middle East, with vaguely highlighted regions. My sisters ancestry, however, showed Caucasian roots in very specific regions of Eastern Turkey, Armenia, Greece, and Persia, as well as parts of Lebanon and Mesopotamia. It was so cool to see. Hope you get what you're looking for with 23 and me; judging from your family history, I can tell it's going to be interesting. 😊

The biggest issue with these tests is that very few people really know what they are looking at when they get their results. Tests can provide recent ancestry but they can also provide deep ancestry, so deep that it proceeds the invention of the nation state by thousands of years. Many people of northern Euro extraction will be surprised to find Greek, Sardinian, Italian and Spanish ancestry- typically about 5-8%. This doesn’t mean you have any of this ancestry but rather that your ancestors lived in southern refuges during the last Ice Age, that, 9000 years, would become these areas. Trace amounts (2% or less) means literally zero… and yes, these results will change constantly because the database is constantly updated. These databases are also heavily skewed because the ethnic determinations are based entirely on who is participating.

I don't think trace amounts means zero. I'm African American with distant Scottish ancestry, about 1%, but I have cousin matches in Scotland. And believe me, it takes time to comprehend all of that. I've even found a "9 th" cousin match that turned out to be my 3rd cousin, who is African American with 12% Scottish ancestry, from the same side as where my Scottish heritage is coming from. So I wouldn't call it nothing or noise, that's why you have to do your genealogical research, because if you don't, you'll miss alot of things you think are zero when they could actually be something alot more than you think.

@@aleqrobinson2876 - 9th cousin is a connection that shares almost 8000 direct ancestors. It’s so diluted as to be non-consequential. My gg grandmother is Punjabi and I show up as 4% of that ethnicity, my kids at 2% and my grandchildren at 1%. By the time the grandkids have kids, unless someone also marries a Punjabi, it’s just trace amounts- essentially it’s bred out of us. It IS fun though, I will definitely agree with that.

My mother her whole life had thought she was just french, Scottish and Irish. Turns out shes 55 percent Jewish and her "full sisters" are her half sisters. She has always been asked if she was Jewish since she was little , I guess that explains it. We found that most of her matches were 100 percent Jewish and she has a secret half sibling that is Jewish. A community she had was in Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. i'm 27 percent Jewish from a test and I look a lot like my mom. We sent in a 23 and me yesterday and I guess we will find out if she has anymore half siblings we don't know about. Me and my mom had both been asked if we had been Jewish over the years just because of our looks.

I’ve taken both of these and there completely different oddly enough. I did 23andMe first and as of recent update, I’m 94% British (English more specifically) with 2.2% Italian and so on. Ancestry as I’ve recently had an update, I’m 49% English with 23% Swedish and Danish (which is the biggest difference compared to 23andMe with no Scandinavian ancestry results), as well as 13% Irish and 13% Scottish. I wonder why I get Scandinavian ancestry appear on one test but nonexistent on another.

I can tell you that rare ethnicities such as Scandinavian and Native American are not always tested for. The rest I can't explain though. My last name is German origin. My area had loads of Germans migrate here in the late 1700's..but I got 0% German and my sister had very low percent of German. I want to try 23 and me now..(I took ancestry already.)

@@kylebuchan9401 Hi Kyle, I used 23 and me & I also used Ancestry- the Ancestry test/results are a bit more detailed than 23 and me and Ancestry has a far superior Family Tree Builder and access to so many more resources. I would recommend the Ancestry test. I discovered a whole lot more than I could ever have expected. Building the family tree has been one of the most fascinating and rewarding things I've ever done. I've discovered war heroes and a direct link to Alexander Hamilton- yes the guy that the Broadway musical is about. I highly recommend you try it!

I did both looking for an unknown biological father. One first cousin matched up on each site. and they knew each other at the nexus of two large families. The family tree on Ancestry provided a good deal of information. The haploid information included by 23 and Me may serve to rule out one family or the other. I am 82 so all the potential fathers are dead, but there is one male cousin in my generation.

I'm surprised you didn't mention their privacy policies because that's one of the biggest things thats kept me from doing one of these tests in the past. Since they are private companies they are not covered by HIPAA and the security of your genetic information is much lower than if it was in the hands of medical professionals

How I made it to this video Is a weird story. I have been having this reoccurring dream for a couple of years now where I am with this man and I know him in my dream but never got around to remembering his name, until yesterday when I had that same dream and called him "levalence" or "Le Valence" I had never heard that name in my life lol... I did the ancestry DNA to hope to find any matches, I was orphaned at age 11 and found out my father was adopted when I was 15 and he passed away in 1993 and my mother passed away in 1999 and only knew that my mother's parents had come from Norway and I have had no luck in finding any family members or matches, I think I maybe the last living relative, not even a cousin match and I was so shocked about my results, I need to try the 23 and me and see what the 2 differences are in heritage and traits sounds nice along with the health aspect included. I needed to know my ancestry for health-related issues like my genetic generalized epilepsy which was found from the geneticists of the University of Calgary Canada and the epilepsy Association, and the it said I had all of the markers for genetic epilepsy but I wasn't tested for anything else, I'm hoping 23 and me will be more helpful, ancestry left me feeling alone when I had no matches and have been waiting for over 5 years for some matches to show up, nothing, zip, nodda. I'm still praying to find out more about me and my family, I wonder if it is a good idea to try the tests again after 5 years, hopefully I can get more accurate info or just the same results of no family matches, what does one do when they may be the last person to still standing. It left me with more questions than answers, like where did my father come from I'm female and it's hard to find out much on my father he was purchased from the church because he was indigenous to Canada and there are no results from him or any of his family, It made me feel more alone in the world since I guess there is only me left. I need to try every DNA test now, I have been searching for anyone who maybe related.

They will show you both. If one of your parents test then it will show you which matches are from your specific parents side. Otherwise, you'll need to dig into the results to guess. I knew my mother was mostly German and my father had Jewish ancestry. So I had a good idea as to which relatives were from which side. Sometime you need to message people and see if they can help you figure it out. Family Tree DNA has a special Y Chromosome add on that can specifically trace your paternal line. But it may not help find your father's mother's side.

I got my 23&me results & I'm a little disappointed 🤏 I did it to know how much Native American I am (which is 51.3%) & what tribe I'm more closely acquainted to. I'm Mexican so I expected something like Aztec/Mayan & some others. Unfortunately 23&me compares tribes recognized by the USA & CAN & not MX. It did however tell me which MX state but thats it. I should have gone with AncestryDNA realizing that it shows me more ppl & famous historical ppl I'm related to. 23&me only showed me 5 ppl & nothing else. All of them arnt active anymore so thats also a downer.

My mom, my maternal half brother, my full sister and I did DNA test with Family Tree DNA. My maternal half brother, my full sister and I did a DNA test with ancestry. I did a DNA test with 23andme. We all have different DNA results from each other. I talked to a employee at Family Tree DNA. That employee told my that my maternal half brother and my full sister have more DNA from my maternal side then me. That employee told me that I have more DNA from my paternal side then my full sister. We did a DNA test to try find 3 of my full sister's kids who got adopted out and the same with my maternal half brother kids to. I did gave my full sister my word that I will keep on looking at our DNA matches to see if her kids is our DNA matches . My full sister passed away this past August of 2020.

I have done a ckecking of several companies that do ancestry testing, 23andMe is the first and only direct-to-consumer DNA test that includes 55+ health reports that meet FDA requirements. However, I believe the most comprehensive ancestry test is 24Genetics with over 1500 regions, as opposed to AncestryDNA. AncestryDNA can estimate your origins to more than 1000 regions around the world. While it is true that AncestryDNA offers family matching, which 24Genetics does not offer.

My daughter has just done 23andme. I was a bit disappointed that welsh, Scottish, Irish and English are lumped together. I am going to do 23andme and ancestry. I was a bit surprised at one result. I thought she would have german and polish because my mother's father came from East Germany to England in the 30s because, as my gran told me, he had seen Hitler at a rally and thought he was crazy. He was a wealthy, land owning German baron. I always thought that seemed weird until my daughters results showed 0 German but high Ashkanazi Jew.

I took ancestry. When I first took it it said I was 53% Sicilian and around 30% Irish. Now they have my percentage as 49% Irish and 27% Sicilian. Does anyone know why that is? My mom took an ancestry test but my dad didn’t and I know that my father is around 75% Sicilian and 25% Irish. My mom is 50% Irish and 25% Sicilian. I feel like something is off.

The fact that your results can change over time makes me question the accuracy of it. I can understand if ethnic groups are added to your results due to more people testing, but I don’t understand how an ethnic group can completely be removed.

I chose AncestryDNA because I needed to dispell the myth that my paternal family line consisted of deadbeats and cowards. Resulting test concluded that particular family line actually consisted of heroes and innovators. Don't those types of people usually get a bad rap anyway? Identity issues solved. Through AncestryDNA. Should I need genetic health info, I will probably test through 23andMe.

I took a DNA test about 12-14 years ago, private company wanted to know how much Viking DNA was in the English population, was for a TV show etc. I came back 100% ancient briton, no VIKING DNA They said back then, my DNA is closely related to the first people to arrive in Briton. Just recently had a Ancestry results arrive, 70% English, which most pin pointing where I live now, which 8% Norway, 7% Sweden. So basically, my past family since arriving in Briton thousands of years ago, and stayed in the exact same location to this day. The references from Norway and Sweden would be from the Anglo Saxon-Viking invasions. All pretty interesting.

I prefer ancestry because they draw from a much larger data base and I find better at the ad mixtures. Genetic ancestors and genealogical ones are not the same as we only share DNA with 120 of our ancestors...so considering our number double each generation, ,2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128...etc. plus you can skip some and have recessive genes....plus there is the entire recombination issues.

I have 22% DNA from my maternal grandma,22% from my paternal grandma, 26% from my paternal grandpa,which gives me 29% from my maternal grandpa. Now ancestry has been wrong in first 5 months. I have 2/8 1x GGs from England yet it said I have 9%, it said 8% Ireland when I have 4 native Irish and 4 scotch Irish 4x GGs from my Fsther’s side, it said 2% Nkrwau when I have no Norwegian ancestors on my grandma’s side from my 1-9th GG,It said 32% Wales when only my grandma’s side was from Wales, there was no French despite my Arcadien ancestors, no Spain and Portugal despite my 6th GG was from Spain and married an Arcadien and possibly one ancestor was from Portugal, 47% Scotland when only my 4th-5th GGa were Scorrish from my Fsther’s side and maternal grandpa’s mkther’s side. Ancestry has a large database that is full of people that have done the text. So if your one grandparent is not in the database thrir DNA might not be recognizable? Ancestry can absolutely get things wrong it is better to do bkth Ancestrt and 23&Me.

If you are looking into family history Ancestry is miles ahead. On the most part you would have 3rd cousins and further. So You would have no idea who the 5000 DNA relatives are.unless you have a very good documented family tree. DNA doesn't tell you where the person is on your tree, or how the are related. 23&me doesn't have documents to search. On ancestry I was able to trace a person (that was a 23andme DNA match) as my 2x great grandmothers brothers daughters sons sons daughter daughters. Let's see you figure out how you are related to that person without documents

The goal of this tests is not to give you an exact percentage with 100% confidence level, that most likely will never be posible, instead you have a clear picture of what are is mostly your genetic heritage and in that regard it is very useful. Consider that even within most countries the population is not genetically similar, i.e. in Italy or Spain there's a great variety of ethnicities or "races" and in Europe or America migrations of people have been coming and going for thousands of years.

I took a test with ancestry. When I first took the test it said that I was 2% Jewish and I was thinking yes I am the chosen one. Lol jk and 6% Italian. My dad‘s mom is full-blooded Italian. Her parents came to America from Italy. And now I only have 1%? So now I’m gonna do 23 and me and see what they say. Ancestry right now at this moment says I am mostly Scottish and Welsh. I didn’t know I have Welsh on mom side for sure. My dad‘s dad only thing I knew that was Cherokee Indian and English. I have no Cherokee Indian in me. My dad took the test with Ancestry and he has no Cherokee. What my dad and I do you have is the Middle East. So I’m thinking in my head that my great grandma was Middle Eastern. She was dark so maybe she said she was Cherokee Indian because it was in Arkansas where she was living?
