I ended up with WAY too many "?, Elizabeth" entries in my tree due to not knowing maiden names, and couldn't tell them apart. What I do instead now is enter the married surname in parentheses. Now I can see WHICH Elizabeth Maiden-Name-Unknown she is, she still alphabetizes at the top of the list so I know she needs more research, and she comes up in a search for that surname. When I find the maiden name, I swap it in there minus the parentheses and she's good to go.

Small world seeing your video and seeing names I know from doing cemetery research back in Missouri. Watching these things, I am ever increasingly glad that I only have to do research in Italy and that my family only took two bounces before exiting the US. Women all kept their maiden names, I never have to wrestle with census enumerations, and the birth/death/marriage records they did keep were so scrupulous that they usually contain more information than I even want. Not that there aren't gotchas, but ... wow, some challenges in genealogy are way worse than what I've had to untangle. Props to the folks who have to deal with this stuff.

thanks for this very informative video. The thing with the same last name happens to me quite often. I get contact on a regular basis on one of my lines with the email header "hey, we are related" not even "hey, we might be related". And in most cases, I have to answer "sorry, but no we are not".

Hi, firstly I find your talks very informative and certainly helpful. A problem that I have, not often, but enough to be a real pain, is that I go into my media on individuals and find that their media (photos) have somehow become detatched. I try to re-attach them but almost always without success and I have to re-load the media into that person/people yet again. This certainly wastes time. Can you tell me what may be causing this please.

Thanks for stopping by, Colin! Sorry to hear that you're running into this issue with media in your tree, we'll be happy to assist. First, you should be able to connect/disconnect media from profiles in your tree. Start by opening the photo in your tree media gallery and then use the options in the column on the right hand side to "+attach to another person" (or if you go via a personal profile in the tree '+Add). Secondly, media files should not get disconnected from profiles by themselves, but they may if the profiles they are linked with are changed (for instance if you delete or adjust a profile, if you merge duplicates, if you change the media etc.) It's a good idea to also review your tree to make sure there are not more than profile for the person you are looking at. Thank you for your videos, this is only the 2nd one I've seen. I was afraid I would find out watching your video that I had made most of the mistakes you have listed and yes I have, I have taken my mothers line back to the 10th century and now I doubt a lot of that being accurate. Part of the reason I didn't record siblings or records, in general, is that I didn't know how to save them.From looking at the details you had in this video it looks as if I had the family tree makers I could more easily store and transfer those items I missed originally. I have been debating on what family tree program to buy I thought I saw in the other video's comments that you recommended family tree make 2012 but I Have seen reviews online about not being able to transfer information from the 2012 tree maker using Windows 10 and some have said that the 2017 version works better with Windows 10,Could you please tell me which program you and your fellow genealogist find best? Thank you Jim

Hi Jim, Some of these videos are a little outdated and I haven't had the chance to update them yet. The current version of Family Tree Maker is FTM 2017. That's the one I use and it works beautifully with Ancestry and Windows 10. Hope that helps. (~Crista)

I have a genealogy file that was sent to me by a relative of my mothers, It goes back to at least 780ad. But it is only the direct ancestors, because the file would have been too big for email. I have it as a second tree in FTM, do I merge it with my tree or keep it separate until I can verify her sources? Thanks for the great presentation, Loved it!

Your story about Maiden names being the same. In the Kentucky marriage record ( I forget) has a field for "How are you related to this other person". When I see the married last name in the maiden name field. I have to ask these people, that own the tree, are they from Kentucky???

Hi Christa. I have recently discovered your videos and even though I've been doing genealogy since 1990 i always find something I had not considered. I was surprised to hear that one of your great aunts was married to Danel Boone. I assume you mean Rebecca Bryan? She is also a great aunt of mine as she is first cousin to my 3xgreat grandmother, also named Rebecca Bryan. Both women were grandaughters of Morgan Bryan. I'd love to know how you connect.
