Anchoring a Cargo Ship - How To (Basic)
Due to the low pressure demands/low cost of most bulk cargoes, bulk carriers often go to anchor upon arrival at a port. This is normally to wait for the previous ship at the loading or discharge berth at it is still undergoing cargo operations. In some cases there could be a queue of vessels in the anchorage waiting to use the same berth. Another reason to go to anchor could be to wait for the next available harbour pilot.
As a bulk carrier regularly goes to anchor, I thought it a perfect opportunity to show you through to basic principles of anchoring from the crew's point of view.
In this video I show you through the basic anchoring operation of a cargo ship. I discuss the operation right from the anchoring plan from the master all the way to actually letting go the anchor and heaving it up again. On this occasion we sailed empty (in ballast condition) from Brisbane to Gladstone and had to wait at the outer anchorage for a few days before a Harbour Pilot was available to guide our vessel to our berth.
As always, if you have any questions related to the video or to the maritime industry or merchant navy, drop a comment below and I will answer all of your questions.

Nice vid, but could you harmonize the volume of music and outside sounds (very loud in comparison) and your voice a little? Especially with earphones the up and down of volume is a bit irritating. Thanks a lot! 😀

When you run the chain out freely doesn't the weight of the chain and the anchor run too fast preventing the brakes from stopping it ?
@jamesmurney1374

Not usually. If the brake is properly maintained it should stop the chain even when running fast. When the water is deeper than 90 feet it's best to walk it out under power. Again proper maintenance is key. At one of the offshore moorings we regularly called we would let go 9 shots all in one go, on a weekly basis with few issues.
