Ancient Art: The SPICIEST climb of the year! | Desert tower escapade in Moab, Utah

The objective was simple: we wanted to climb as many desert towers as possible on our way home for the holidays. Our experience with desert tower climbing? Zero! So we drove to Moab, Utah - the land of sandstone and towers! We started our mission with a warm up on Owl Rock in Arches National Park, then got a little in over our heads on Stolen Chimney at Fisher Towers, and ended our trip on The Mace in Sedona, AZ. It was a desert road trip to remember and the off-width sufferfest will not soon be forgotten! Enjoy:)

Spent the summer knocking off towers all over Utah with Fred Becky back in the day. Staying at Eric Bjornstads trailer in Moab was the highlight when he broke out his old slides as he and Fred talked about the old days of real Dirtbag climbing. The guy could tell you how the entire trip went by one slide of his pink Cadillac on some random dirt road. Miss those crazy phone calls from my old pal Fred. "Come on man just need a few days to get it done, work will be there or she will be there when you get back, I got it all figured out, I can be there in 5 or 6 hours" he would say.
@codyandvictoria
@codyandvictoria 6 ай бұрын
Damn I couldn't imagine what it was like back in those days. I think every climber would have liked to hang with the legends and do some sketchy shit 😅 Those guys had balls of steel and not a care in the world. Back before you could make money on KZbin for doing it... Happy with where we're at but I bet it was pretty sweet back then too.

Awesome, I was just up there in early September, but I got stuck on that weird wedge pinch where your left hand is at 12:44 and couldn't get my right foot up. Projecting a boulder problem for 15 mins with 400' of air below, was definitely something new for me! Did you skip that wedge pinch, and just move through to the bucket?
@codyandvictoria
@codyandvictoria 6 ай бұрын
Yeah you know everyone talks about the 5.10 pitches but that last pitch was tough and sketchy. I ended up trusting the pinch just long enough to get a foot up and reach the sandy bucket. After that it gets a bit easier but the exposure gets worse. Then you pull over the bulge on the right side which is also a tough move. At least you could pull up on the quick draw if you wanted...

Love the dual pattern and unicore. It's our favorite rope. We keep buying the same one over and over. Idk if I'll ever get a non-dual rope again. Its super convenient for rapping. It does coil a little but I blame the grigri. Never had coil problems back when we used an ATC

Just what we need, to draw more attention to an already overcrowded, overused and overrun climbing area. When I climbed ancient art 25 years ago, the fishers were empty and pristine, now the area is trashed and overrun with white vans. Keep your drones out of the towers. I wish climbers these days would just climb for themselves and leave it there, try it, it’s more enjoyable and satisfying to not spray about every climb and every area.

The only constant is change. You can either keep living in the past and sulking in your suffering or accept that things change and be a positive advocate for the outdoors. People are going to climb there no matter what, so how can we improve it rather than complain in comment sections? Change your mind, change your life. Wishing you the best.

No actually! We carried two ropes to the climb but ended up only climbing with one. The original beta says to rappel with doubles but we managed with a single. We had mentioned the two ropes but it got cut from the edit 😅 figured nobody would notice...
