Damn son - they weren't kidding when they said "the old oak tree". Be cool if you found a 5000 year old penny embedded in there somewhere - it'd be worth like ... 160p in today's money with inflation and all. 💲💲 This will be on Antique Roadshow in another 5000 years and they'll be able to accurately date it by this KZbin video. But ma~~te - that thing is Hot stuff with a capital H. That black oak - OhwOw 🥓🥓 bacon sizzle!!

Awesome work Alan! Isn't it nice when a plan comes together so well? I always enjoy your commentary, and that was very interesting how you can judge how long the wood sat in the bog by the colour! I know this stuff is expensive. I believe they also use it for tobacco pipes in place of briar. Keep it up buddy! Kyler
@alanscannell5 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud thank you. I've never seen it as a pipe but is so hard I imagine it would take a long time to burn. The shavings where good for starting the fire though 😁

Nice job! The finished piece has a strong presence, even just on a video. Its almost like the copper is fragments of shrapnel that were caught up in the bog too I have a few pieces of east anglian bog oak, and they are black as coal or ebony, must be very old? I have problems with the bog oak sometimes. When its combined in projects with other woods (especially ash) the black dust tends to get onto the lighter coloured wood and stain it. Any tips to avoid that?
@alanscannell4 жыл бұрын
Cheers thank you very much. Yea that has happened to me too. A friend of mine recommend putting a light coat of epoxy on the opposing wood to almost seal it as such but I've not tried it myself

Alan, I'm curious instead of the cacao why not pack the cracks with the bog oak dust and shavings?
@alanscannell4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. I could have done as you say with the shavings but the ones I had where very course the cacao was a finer dust and it also sets quicker as it has more surface area with the glue. Plus I had it to hand which helped 😉
@notwhereyouthink4 жыл бұрын
@@alanscannell Alan you could be right it's just that I've turned a fair bit of bog oak over the years and end up looking like a welsh miner after a few seconds. And the older the wood the harder it is. You might as well be cutting diamonds.
@alanscannell4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for late reply I've not been getting notifications . Yes generally I'd end up looking the same and it can be as hard as concrete. It's tough stuff
