This is an excellent video, especially for those starting out. It was for me. "Buy the best coin you can afford" (within your budget of course) and "Buy a coin you'll still like years later" has prevented me from buying coins I wish I hadn't. TY.

What I can regommend is to copy the pictures of the coins your are intressted open it with a photo software and examine the coin and comapre it with sources like wildwinds. This can help you to see what some other might not see and it might help you to avoid fakes. Especially when you can compare the die, the legends with an original. Besides this it helps you to determine if the avers and the reverse of the coin make sense or ist it a mule or a fake like the modern fakes from Gordianus III.

I am very happy today, having won my first Roman (Republic) coin in the Savaco 100 auction! It is my very first ancient coin! But on another topic, I had a question in regards to certain information I saw within the description area of a Greek coin auction at another auction house. So if you can tell me, what does the "1h" mean in the following description -- "9.15g - 22.6mm - 1h." I know what the g and mm refer to but I am not sure what the 1h means.
@ClassicalNumismatics3 жыл бұрын
Congratulations! Hopefully thats the first of many coins! Thats the die shift between obverse and reverse! Think about the clock. A 12h would mean the "Up" side of the obverse is aligned to the "Up" side of the reverse, while a 6h would mean they are perfectly flipped. 1h means the reverse and obverse are almost aligned, but the reverse is slightly rotated.

I have seen a number of .coins offered for such a ridiculously low price that it should be obvious that the coins fake. Many of the coins looks like their quality is about the same a play money sold at the local dollar store and just scream fake.

These auction houses all require references to register. Three references from auction houses i have purchased at before. Which seems strange, because not everyone has bid at auctions before, unless ebay counts?
@ClassicalNumismatics2 жыл бұрын
From personal experience, if you have purchased from Vcoins, MA shops, or any established and registered store, and you can show them a paid invoice, that is acceptable too. Its mostly a way to verify your identity

Are E Bay auctions safe? I'm a new collecting and Ive been collecting since October of 2020, recently I have been going on ebay and making my auctions there with currently half success. Is their any other places you recommend that I can purchase Roman coins at all? Thank you much.
@ClassicalNumismatics3 жыл бұрын
I´d recommend you only venture on eBay once you are a bit more knowledgeable on coin collecting. I´ve got a couple of videos on how to get started, and how to buy coins online, have a look at them, they give you a nice summary.

Don´t buy ancient coins on e-bay, there are 2 honest regular sellers, and 20 crimanals regular sellers, selling fakes for good money and making lifes out of that criminal activity. Auction houses are the safest way, almost every day you have ancient coins selling on Catawiki, i usualy by from the seller Owl & Wolf, who usualy have very beautifull items, and also there´s several auctions every month on other specialized auctioneers.

How could I know if the auction houses are overpriced? and is really NGC graded drives the coin prices up? Hope you could notice me :D
@davidwest60193 жыл бұрын
Usually, if its a decent auction house that goes by lots, they may have 4 or 5 of the same coin, and you can see the high and low bids. It will be clear as day that usually the coins with the highest definition and no flaws may sell for x2, x3 even x10 of ones that have fuzzy details, cracks, and other issues. You can then compare the low and high end to vcoins and other large sellers to see if it is inline with the auction. Granted, some auctions in other countries will be at a premium due to currency exchange rates, for example, I would highly suggest not bidding on certain EU auction houses (especially the famous ones) because what may be a decent price in Euro could be ridiculously expensive in dollars (British pounds are also do not exchange well with dollar). CHF, or Swiss Franc, also dont exchange well, and I find Swiss auction to be the most overpriced of all the ones I come across.

I wonder why shipping is so expensive in MA shops, I can ship an insured package to the moon with such prices
@ClassicalNumismatics Жыл бұрын
Sadly it seems like shipping overall has become much more expensive. Even stuff on ebay locally has pretty steep shipping costs. Add to that the fact they usually ship with tracking, etc, and the result is that overly expensive cost :(
@siisjwj7647 Жыл бұрын
@@ClassicalNumismatics Yes unfortunately! Sellers there have GREAT pieces and compared to most places quite good prices, but I still believe they should give an option of a lower quality shipping, maybe without tracking or lower insurance, I truly do not want to pay $55 to ship an small package.
