Some additional info on the Koson stater. Both of the obverse and the reverse designs are based on earlier Roman designs which has also helped in timing the coin. The obverse design is based on the reverse of a denarius minted by Brutus in 54 BC, while the reverse is likely based on an older Republican design from 73 BC. Kosons also exist in two styles. The coins of finer more Roman style as seen here are of high gold content that matches the refined gold used by the Romans. There are also coins of cruder style that were minted from impure gold that matches the gold used by the Dacians on their jewellery. Kosons minted in silver also exist, but they are scarcer. Thanks once again for a nice video!

I had the same feeling when I first discovered ancient coins. I still feel the same way about them today!

Absolutely love the historical context. That’s what got me back into collecting in my 70’s.

Awesome video! Haven't yet gotten my hands in a Ptolemaic coin yet... Still, I don't understand how this channel doesn't have a trillion views at the very least!

Wow, I admire your beautiful gold coins! My nicest coin is a silver Corinthian Drachma. A beautiful portrait of a helmeted Athena on the obverse with an equally beautiful image of Pegasus on the reverse. Dated between 300-375 B.C. Someday I hope to acquire a gold coin as well. Great and informative video!

Thank you very much for the great video. I bought my first ancient gold coin few months ago. A tremissis of Zeno I. Hope I can add an aureus soon.

I have solidi of Honorius, Anastasius, and Justinian I, and a semissis of Justin I. Hoping to add a stater or aureus soon, although those prices are frightful...

Inherited an early croesus stater in decent condition. Would never be able to afford buying one today - they go for up to $50k.....

These are awesome looking coins. Would love to get my hands on at least one of them, Alexander The Great gold stater to be specific. The only numismatic coin I have right now is one from the early 20th century, a 1907 Saint Gauden's Double Eagle.

Do you have a recommendation for a first ancient gold coin to start looking for? Are there any relatively common affordable coins for gold like there are for silver coins? Preferably pre-byzantine
@ClassicalNumismatics3 жыл бұрын
Pre-byzantine you will probably want to look for fractional electrum from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC from Ionia :)

It's interesting that a coin like this could be worth 50-100 days of work back then. My income is average for my country, but if i was paid in gold I'd probably be making about a half ounce a week

I'd absolutely love the idea of being paid part of my salary in gold!
