The Second Century AD was a golden age for the Roman Empire. 5 virtuous emperors ruled back to back, bringing their empire to a level of prosperity and success Rome would never again see in its history.
The economic prosperity ushered by their competent reigns resulted on a vast coinage of all metals reaching our days. Today, we´re taking a look at some of the coinage of these Emperors.

I'd like to give an honorary mention to two overlooked guys from this era: Lucius Aelius and Lucius Verus. Aelius was the adopted son of Hadrian for a little over a year, before his untimely death in 138 AD. Antoninus Pius was adopted next (just shortly before Hadrians death), on condition that he would assign Marcus Aurelius (Pius' nephew) and Lucius Verus (son of Aelius) as co-emperors upon his death. The fact that this indeed happened almost 23 years later is a good sign of stability in the empire :-)

Domitian was a top tier emperor. He reformed the currency and expanded the empires defenses.

You are correct in thinking that Domitian was more competent than people give him credit for. I think it was the same for Nero. Actually, come to think of it, a lot of the bad emperors were actually not bad, as far as administration goes.

Early on I started focusing on collecting Hadrian's coins. Collecting all the emperors and time periods of Roman history seemed too daunting of a task. Great thing about Hadrian was his long rule and relative prosperity led to a nice variety of coins from Rome and the various provincial mints.

I’ve just started collecting Ancient Roman coins after finishing my degree in Classical History. All of my coins are graded by NGC though and I’ve got Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Antoninus Pius, Lucius Verus and Commodus denarius coins. I just need Nerva and I’ll have all 5 good emperors. Oh and I also picked up a Roman silver “Quadrigatus” (6.6 grams) from 242-214 BC during the Second Punic War. The predecessor to the denarius which may have been a didrachm at the time.

Marcus Aurelius was one of the very few "actually" Roman emperors... he was one of the very few emperors born in Rome 😄

True! Even Antoninus, who stayed in Italy pretty much all of his life, was born on a small town outside of Rome!

@@Numischannel Unfortunalety that is not so true. Historia Augustorum uses a rhetorical term which glorifies Mark Auerlius and damns Lucius Verus. But his father in law conspired against Lucius. And at the end Luciu's wife and daughter have been killed by Commodus. A sad stroy found its end....

I absolutely LOVE all of your videos! I am new in Greek and Roman coins - But I am actually gobsmacked about the beauty of the designs - And I like so much the imperfections of them as they were made by hand ... Total craftmanship! Have you got any videos about Olynthos and the Chalkidian league?

I didn't even know I was building a 5 Good Emperors collection, I just happen to have wound up with 2 Trajans, 2 Hadrians and an Antoninus Pius. But then a couple of "not-so-Good Emperors" from later like Caracalla and Severus Alexander and a Julia Maesa.

Nerva reminds me of Juan Carlos in Spain. Raised to be a puppet but showed free will and created a democracy. I am happy to hear anything pro or con. Studying in Granada in 2002, I got mostly an Andalusian point of view.
