When I was younger I used to put items that didn't fit the perfect picture of an axe or arrowhead off to the side. Now I bring them home and after studying them realize they are genuine artifacts. I now hang onto chips and check them out later at home. I once found a perfect small point that way. Glad I didn't toss it away. Found a primitive axe, tool today by the front porch where I had layed it down a couple summers ago. You could see the finger areas on it so could be used by hand too. Always learning, thanks!

Most don't get there's been many resets some tools were made long before chest tools look at artifacts chimps use when you need a tool many things work. I've also picked up perfect flint arrowheads and the outside flakes off leaving the shape but the glassy surface is gone

They look like the typical rock I use for flintknapping. The heavy top is used for direct percussion and the rounded tip is for pressure flaking.

I have been watching your videos today trying to wrap my brain around it as someone looking from the outside in. From the comments I have learned that people expect stone tools to be some elaborate task to create. They must believe that peoples walked around with a big heavy bag of finely crafted stone tools. I'm pretty sure, being nomadic, they probably made a lot of crude tools to use, and left them lay when it's time to move on, so you might be on to something. Spear heads, and arrow heads they take with them, and need to perform, so they will be more elaborate.

It seems to me if the stones were shaped....they could have put an edge on the axe, or at least something that looks like an edge. Haft one of those and chop something with it. Im am curious, do u have an answer? I am interested in stone tools.

Those creek rocks have been shaped by man. You should review some of the literature on ground stone tools. Jenny Adams of Utah has produced a seminal paper on ground stone tools. Perhaps you can find someone to read it to you.

Nice job! Stones were the first tools man used before technology advanced us. Mankind has built cities and destroyed them hundreds of times over. Stones last forever so imagine all the stone tools there are just scattered about that litterally have been around for thousands of years. I'm sure rock tools were mass produced as well and some even probly have trademarks from the craftsman like a special symbol to show what manufacturer made them. Majority of people say they are just rocks because they aren't wrong. Alot of these tools are made from a "template rock" which is a rock that is naturally found everywhere that nature does in deed shape. They take one of these rocks and then fine tune and shape into final product. When you hold one of these modified rocks its obvious that it was designed by man. They fit like a glove most of the time with little indents for your fingers to grip. You don't even have to be educated, anyone with anyform of intelligence can tell when something has been modified. Not only does the object look different, it carries an energy with it like any other handcrafted merchandise out there. You can just tell by the vibe. If you don't believe in vibes, well you probably won't ever then. Stay dangerous and always know your weapons before you have to.

Lol I work with Museum directors on helping them identify certain kinds of artifacts I am also a flintknapper and make hard Stone tools celts different type of axes plummets atlatl weights Etc made in the United States and South America so I do know what I'm talking about and have spent many thousands of hours researching and learning about real artifacts and how to identify artifacts it's sad when you can be fooled by some plain River Rocks

Uhhhh Will? @3:16 if you pause, that stone looks to have a petroglyf above your hand at the top....It looks a bit like Kokopelli without the flute from here...In fact the whole stone seems to have some titanium based dioxide all over it. Then again, the stone is on KZbin and maybe I am seeing things?

Same things I've been collecting for 15 yrs. nice relief/carving btw on that one in the center. lay them out in the same directions,dim your lighting and use a flashlight from all side angles 360° < > to see the other things your missing. most of those knotches have a burnt polished area in the corner nook also, as if wood or a handle or sorts worn into the inner nook or pine tar. I have some with black coating. most of the paddle shape ones have a figure facing the larger inpacting area, check it out. most are ornamental I find and VERY....Very old and worn. they are found along side, newer... Arrow heads and pottery...So, I took some to a guy, A.G. at USC He said they were pre history and insignificant. I assume because they were not gleaming Arrowheads in his mind, it just doesn't count as anything lol. when you can get 30-40 of the exact same tool made from various materials it makes a valid point. after finding a small skull made of white quartz I started just looking for the reliefs. some look like earlier Egyptian type people with some simple hieroglyphs and head wear. makes me wonder if Native Americans desended via Egyptians. j/s lol.

me too James, a single light source to cast shadows across the rocks, a candle is good too, some were made for viewing by camp fire and when you find those images they can be made to move a little by tilting the rock. This is a little known art form. Practically every race was visiting north America at one time or another in the past. Totem rocks are the most overlooked artifacts due to the unbelievable complexity of the work, overlapping images within images, a-symmetrical characteristics and negative images, or half negative and half positive. Often the images are elusive until the brain gets "tuned in ".

The top left stone, or the stone on the left at frame 7:12, does that have a cup like top? Like a nutting stone depression about the size or a little smaller than a tennis ball? If so, is there burnt pine pitch residue?

No Scott I looked at the stone and there is no indent at all and no burnt residue on it. This particular stone has me stumped though. It is so well crafted but for what I don't know. I do not see any thing on it that shows signs of use as a tool. That's what makes this fasinating trying to figure it out.
