I remember seeing les's rover parked in Cairns in the late 80s or early 90s, i made my mum who i was with that day stay with me within seeing distance of his 4wd for n hour or so just to get a glimpse or maybe even say hello to the man himself, i was about 10 years of age and knew without a doubt it was his 4wd, he didn't show and i was dragged away by my mum to head home and i was so upset i didn't get to see him. A couple of year's later we we're wondering around the Karanda markets and there in front of me was a hat i knew all too well.... it was Les! I was in shock...so full of excitement and nerves and all i wanted to do was say something to him... maybe a hello or i love your show or "boil him up cook him up"!!... but said nothing!! Nerves got the better of me, so i just stalked him and followed him around for ages and didn't take my eye off him. My parents thought it was hilarious. Im 42 now and would probably do the same thing if i saw him today!! 😂😂😂 love this man and the memories of sitting on the floor cross legged as a child loving every second of his show. He taught me so much as a kid that i have carried on as an adult and now teach my own children on our travels. As far as i know he still lives in Karanda west of Cairns. What a true Aussie legend, and what great memories watching all this again has brought back. T.v at it's finest and an age when the world was better. ❤

I loved watching this series when it first came out 34 years ago, now I’m watching it again and can see why. The production, cinematography, Les’s knowledge and the whole laidback presentation makes it way ahead of its time.

I thank God for these videos, I was pretty destitute and depressed, and discovered these accidentally. Major Hiddens took my mind off my troubles and entertained and informed me, and I'm forever grateful. Australia should be, and I imagine is, be very proud of him.

@@MrBamaga Oddly enough, for me it was Ray Mears since i was a kid,in eastern europe. Made me wish to travel as much as he did...Which i finally did, being all over the world-including Australia and New Zeeland. Fantastic places-i wish i could have went to western Australia, though. Ray has a slew of episodes in Australia, even a mini series,"Ray Mears go walkabout"! In one of the episodes, there is Les-which prompted me to search more of him...good thing i did. Cheers!

I watched these programmes years ago when Les was a young man in the Australian Army and I was a young man too, dreaming of visiting the Australian Outback. I am no longer a young man and unlikely to ever visit Australia . These videos bring back happy memories. Thankyou Les

I was in year 3 when this was originally broadcast in 88, so great to see Les again. I remember going and building a bivi as a kid as my mum would let me go for an overnighter out bush about 1km from our house (you could that in the 80's and early 90's). I would take my camping hoochie, webbing, mini stove and a line, catch fish or some yabbies and just have a great time. Since then the local council has blocked off all that area and drained the little river and the damn. I tried to visit the area and the police came quickly to escort me off it, whereas back in the day they would ask how the camp went.

I loved this show as a kid. Watching this makes you think about the modern day adventure shows. Stretched landcruisers with all the fruit you could imagine hundreds of thousands spent on the vehicles alone. Les is just puttin around in a 4 cylinder landrover as basic as they come (maybe in less comfort) but also seems with a lot less fuss.

What they don’t tell you is that you are supposed to walk through the water crossing to check the depth and hidden rocks for the best path. This takes some courage when the Estuarine Crocodile warning sign is right there as you enter the water, and all the time you’re hoping some great big lizard doesn’t grab your leg and pull you under.
