Confession of sins is mentioned throughout the Scriptures and practiced by the Orthodox Church. But is a priest really necessary for this practice? What happens if he withholds forgiveness? Did God really give that kind of authority to sinful clergy? Can’t we just confess alone to God at home? Why confess at all, if God knows our thoughts? Join Fr. Stephen De Young and Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick as they continue their series on the sacraments of the Orthodox Church.

This show is nearly three full hours long. The whole thing about "the third half of the show" is a call-back to the old 'Car Talk' program on NPR.

We can not confess our sins to the entirety of the church due to our spiritual pride and lack of connection to the bretheren and by we I mean primarily myself.

hey guys, thanks for the episode soo my question is... any maybe I missed it and u can point me the right way or maybe I got confused. but why did christ have to die? I've always under stood that he had to die in our place because we deserve death due to not being clean there for we could never be in God's presence

Blood payment for sins, he became the sacrifice. The scapegoat so Jews don’t have to preform the scapegoat ritual.

He died for our sins. Jesus died to take the consequence of sin which is death being Himself life. Being also fully man he resurrected as the first-fruit of the resurrection establishing the Eucharist so we can partake of the tree of life which we were kicked out of the garden. He also established His Church as a mechanism to be united to Him as one body. Christ being united fully to the Father salvation is to be fully united to Christ in other words through the work of the Holy Spirit when we confirm to His image we give birth to Christ the Logos within us and the son of glory raises in our heart. Salvation is to aquire the Holy Spirit.

What sins was Jesus punished for? Lutheran say: ALL of them! For the sins of all time and all people. The fact that you didn't know that answer is telling! I could go on about a LOT of about your snickers and assertions about those who think differently - but I fear that might be rather silly. I don't mean to burst your little bubble here, dear brothers in Christ, but I would have a lot more respect for you if you actually brought a good Lutheran theologian in to help you discuss these issues in depth. Maybe you have otherwise? I can't say since I just came across this channel. The thing is, I was really eager to hear what YOU had to say about what it means for you that Jesus is your savior. But frankly, I got so tired of your complaining that I ran out of patience waiting!

Why would they throw away their traditions that have been passed down for 2000 years to listen to a Lutheran that came after the establishment of their traditions? They explain their position very well. And for those that are like me, who are interested in being Greek Orthodox, I love that they also mention how it differs from Protestantism You're trying to correct someone and something that you don't understand! It leads me to believe you were automatically going to correct them without even hearing them out and try to establish that what you believe is the right way.

@@hickneedandy No, actually I listened very carefully, and, as a Lutheran pastor, my objection is that they misrepresented our confession of faith, commenting on Lutheranism but lacking enough knowledge or understanding to do so properly. At one point they asked the simple question "What sins was Jesus punished for?" and implying that Lutherans had no answer! It is a doctrine that every Lutheran should know - but the hosts did not know it!

Do you even know what you are talking about !? This confessing led to nothing but evil in the Catholic Church.
