This sounds very similar to another story that i heard about earth babies being slowly changed into Marsians. I do not know which story came first. They were both iinteresting.

This story shares a similar concept with Frederic Brown's excellent Keep Out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4u0ooJ5Z9atf5I As this story was published half a year after Mr Brown's story, I would speculate that Ms Kamien read (or heard about) Keep Out!, and thought, «yeah, that would not work!» and then wrote this to make her point.
