Great race in 1976! Breaks the world record by over 3 seconds!! He was 8 years older than me I went to the same school as David, later in the year he came back to the school to meet the swim team. I still remember the Olympic gold medal on a chain in a wooden box. Seeing his win in 1976 inspired me to train hard and race hard. My favorite race? The 200m Breast stroke. I'm still training and racing to this day. In 2020 and at 59 years old the excitement has never worn off!!! I still love it!!

I swam with him in Florida in the early 70's. He was key in getting goggles into swimming along with the cap. Great guy and great swimmer!

Has to be one of Great Britain’s greatest ever gold medals. David Wilkie beating the Americans and breaking the world record in an Olympic final. Incredible. Why is this never mentioned? It should be on a regular basis.

As an American , please look at the 200 meter breaststroke for men or for women. USA has never done well in it. Except 2020 (1) where Lily King and Annie Lazor got a silver and bronze after Shoenmaker from South Africa. It is slow and boring to swim. Most swimmer want to sprint or maybe do long distance swimming. The 200 meter breaststroke is not sprinting or long distance swimming like the 800 or 1500 freestyle. I would suggest Brits to really concentrate on the 200 meter breaststroke for men. The Japanese swimmers have done well in it. So can you!

I really like the 4x100 meter medley for men at the Tokyo Olympics. This should be mentioned often. It should be on a regular basis. US beating the British. I can't believe I just type that. Used to be beating the Aussies or the Russians. Well I will add the British. Why not. You were the favorites going in. You are great!

I saw him swim when I was a child at Whitehill Pool in Dennistoun, Glasgow. He swam to one side of the pool and back in 6.5 seconds in an exhibition.

USA never wins the 200 meters for men or women. Americans like speed and the breaststroke is the slowest of the strokes and the 200 is twice as slow as the 100 of course. We don't like it too much. The USA also encouraged Felipe "El Tibio" Munoz to win it at the 1968 Olympics. Wilkie trained in the USA. Now why did we let him do that ? Well he was going to do the 200 meter breaststroke of course. We didn't really care too much about that race. Only the 100 meter breaststroke as it is used in the 4x100 meter medley relay. We do care about that relay. 15 of 15.
