I have officially watched way too many comparison videos between the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and the Canon 1.2 EF. In every video, the Canon is always soft or even blurry when shooting wide open. The Canon always has the purple haze, and lens issues despite it's solid build quality. It's amazing to see a cheaper 1.4 take out an expensive and well respected 1.2 lens in almost every test. The Sigma is actually the best overall in this 50mm category. Just look at a Canon EF 50mm 1.4 compared to the Sigma 50mm 1.4. The Canon is older I'll give it that, but the robust size of the Sigma, and the build quality difference is night and day. Obviously there are better and more expensive lenses, but to buy a Sigma 50mm 1.4 used for $500, and have tack sharp images and great bokeh almost every time makes the Sigma a winner for me. This video shows pretty much a tie between a brand new RF lens for more than double the price, and the Sigma 1.4. I have made my final purchase decision (Sigma) based on these findings as well.

Good comparison. Focus speed for practical use is tricky to measure. End to end whether in to out or out to in is just part of the measure. Keeper rate is determined by the last little bit of focus time in some cases in which it is close for a moving target but not close enough or quick enough. I have both the Sigma 50 ART and the RF50f1.2

Focus is definitely hard to put into practical circumstances since a lot of it is due to lighting. I do what I can though to give an idea of what to expect.

I have the RF Adapter to EF with the Drop-in-filters and must say it's just not letting me buy any RF lenses as it is so convenient with the Drop-in-filters. I have the polarizing and the ND Filter as well as the clear one and I love it. No extra filters needed for all the Lenses. Yesterday my EF 50mm f1.4 got stuck on Focus. This lead me here and I need to think about the RF 50mm F1.2 or the Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art 🤔. What would you be choosing? Is the RF really worth it to buy new front filters and all or would you stick with the Sigma if you had to choose?

I’ve had the sigma for the last three years and used it intensively professionally on R6 and R6mkII (events, portraiture), I think I shot 3/4 of my work with this lens. What I liked: it’s sharp, and it takes advantage of the quicker FPS burst on these cameras like any other more recent EF and RF lenses. And that was it. What I didn’t like: it disables IBIS both in photo and video, and you have to enable it via menu when switching lenses, unless the lens has its own IS switch. It came apart in two occasions, while on the job. Luckily I could manage to get my hands on some tiny Phillips screwdrivers and got it back together: build quality, not so good. And it’s heavy and bulky. It is over corrected, meaning that the images look very clean, sharp, no vignetting, no fringing, yet very, very flat, no matter how good the light is. So I got rid of it and replaced it with a EF 50 1.2: I’ve been hesitant for months, having read and seen so many bad reviews. I had rented it on a job a few years ago (in studio portraits), and liked it a lot. A friend of mine has one and I borrowed it a couple times recently, and liked it a lot, again. I don’t know if I got lucky, but my current unit is surprisingly sharp at any aperture, yet very much three dimensional. The images it delivers look longer in focal length than it really is, full of detail, the out of focus areas are creamy and the separation is there even when stopped down. Color rendition and overall image quality is homogeneous with my other more recent EF-L glass (100macro, 16-35f4IS), a lot more pleasing than the sigma has been. Your sample looks either faulty, or the way you compared them didn’t do a good enough job to put things into perspective.

I’ve owned both EF Canon and Sigma. The real thing here is define “better”. Sharper? Less CA? Of course Sigma wins in these departments, it’s very evident but somehow there’s something magical and hard to explain about the image from the 50 1.2L. I just looks nicer to my eyes. I think it all will come down to your shooting style, preferences in look and determine your image. Me, personally,, after owning both, would pick up the 50 1.2L anytime. Many people are so overobsessed with sharpness and perfect lookind glass that may lose that character that the lens has got to it.
@rynfilms4 жыл бұрын

And then there is auto focus and etc and the sigma again takes the cake even in this video. Clearly the sigma is way better than the rest of the bunch deal with it boys 🤣😂 Love your videos brother 👍
@giacomom23704 жыл бұрын
J F you’re mistaken dude. Character is why lenses are made. Take for example de Canon 35mm f1.4L II which is over corrected, way too sharp that the bokeh isn’t as nice as the V1. If sharpness was everything there wouldn’t exist diffusion filters such as the Schneider Blackmagic or Tiffen Black Pro Mist. There’s a purpose for each lens and situation. It’ll all come down to preference, taste, communication through the image, artistic choice. What you described are prescription glasses for your eyes, these are tools for creating. And just to clarify I still own Sigma Art and Canon L glass and each one of those has a place in the creative and narrative process.
@ssmith2784 жыл бұрын
I agree with J F. Sharpness is best as long as the color is correct and the bokeh is acceptable. If you want a softer image, you can always de-focus the Sigma slightly, use soft filters, or soften it in post processing. Even though I don't own it yet I would go with the Sigma. Great video, RYN films.

I'm hoping to get out and get some shots in with it today. The wife is due to pop any day now, so we're running out of time for maternity shots. The only lens I have so far, though, is a Canon 24-70 f2.8 II. I'm considering a Sigma 50mm Art and a Canon 70-200mm F2.8II to round out my set (for the time being).

All the while I had the EF, aside from the severe CA when used wide open at 1.2, my images were always soft, and sometimes missed focus. I hope to have a happier time with the RF. I would have loved if you tested at f/1.4 though, to equalise at the Sigma WOA. The most severe CA of the EF is experienced at 1.2 and 1.4. At f/2, it’s almost disappeared. Good job all the same.

It may be better when use a mirror less focus mode. The benefit of EF 50 1.2 is lighter. RF and Sigma is quiet heavy. And for portrait, I don't need so sharp or many pixels.
