This song is the closest to a theme song for feeling existential dread as someone could make. The world is ending and we are just sitting around wasting our attention on nonsense. But we are all trying to ignore the helplessness we feel. 'The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all'

It used to be, when I found a new song I loved, I’d listen to it on repeat for hours. Now I go on KZbin and watch it over and over again with different strangers who are seeing it for the first time. Life is weird. But thank you for what you do here. I doubt it was your goal, but one thing you do is help pathetically lonely music lovers like me feel a little less alone. Or maybe I’m the only one, how would I know. Anyway, thanks. Love.

Fantastic reaction thanks for posting. Your face looked so forlorn during some of the hardest hitting lyrics. Thought I'd mention a few things I had to research to comprehend a lot of the lyrics. The main theme is climate change and the almost total inaction and apathy towards it.. like you said "important things going on and people distracted by half off at the gap and stuff". The lyrics 20000 years of this seven more to go is about a (UN or IAEA can't remember) study that in 7 years catastrophic climate change will be unavoidable. Also hinted at with "world at your fingertips the ocean at your door". Lyrics about disassociation and derealization could have a double meaning in representing both Bo's own perspective looking at what's happening and his likely belief that the world is choosing to disassociate from the oncoming train. A lot of the early lines speak to rampant consumerism, internet/news culture, and technology being put to the wrong uses all of which hurt a genuine effort to tackle climate change.

I highly recommend "Eff" as an example of his rapping. On top of being a great sounding song it's the epitome of Bo (or at least many people's oversimplified first impressions of him). At first glance it seems like a joke song with a basic punchline (basically him just dropping endless F-bombs), but it's an incredibly intelligent, lyrically impressivd assault on pretty much everything. "Words Words Words" is more lyrically impressive as his wordplay is crazy and pretty much every line has three meanings. The two songs are on the opposite ends of Bo's Rap spectrum. For more of his diversity- "Country Song" is a really great country song making fun of country music.

I dont know if anyone else realized this, but when Bo said the line about 7 more years and it’ll be over (or something like that) I think he was talking about the clock in New York that counts down the time we have until a climate disaster because of climate change. Around the time this song was made and INSIDE came out, the clock said we have 7 years until a climate disaster happened. I might’ve miss interpreted this line but I just wanted to put this out there as an idea

I’m legit so pumped you found him. I’ve never felt more seen than by what Bo talks about. He is truly funny, truly a musical & artistic genius, but he’s real enough and self-aware enough to point out that he makes fun of life as a tool or a distraction. I think there’s a large faction of people out there who feel like we’re just going through the motions and not really addressing what bothers us or what’s really going on in the world, and Bo encapsulates, and shares that insight widely. Very very happy to see others embracing him.

This song of Bo's was an experience for me. It made so much sense in the context of my whole life. That weird, funny feeling when you hear the small things and big things. The unbelievable parts of awful real events and the wholesome and good parts of life all coexisting, makes you consider that somehow you can still have this bizarre feeling of happiness and sadness, anger and numbness to the world.

I'm glad you enjoy Bo Burnham he really is a mad lyricist, on your free time if you ever have any. I reccomend checking out some covers to some of Bo Burnham songs just because often times the comedy performance distracts from the music and with alot of covers they play the music seriously. Disassociation Is when the brain deals with too much stress at once and effectively taps out. Sometimes it manifests as an overactive imagination. Sometimes as hallucinations. Sometimes as an alternate personality. Derealization is when a mind severs its own connection to external stimuli, and convinces itself to believe that nothing outside of itself is real.

This song feels like a ballad to being in COVID lockdown and how the 24 hour news cycle, capitalist shilling, ceaseless ads blaring in the background while outside there are COVID deaths, mass shootings, economic failures, government apathy. During all of that, you get the funny felling, existential dread, it's something that we all felt at one point. A scary guy feeling like we're rapidly spiralling into madness. I'm sure someone already said that both songs you're talking about are from the same special

The competing polar opposites , cognitive dissonance, even down to the James Taylor homage of soft delivery in a warm voice full of heavy things in a “parody” song in a “comedy “special . Bo burnham’s Inside is an onion layer by layer details all coinciding with his intended message . IMHO will go down as the Definitive piece of art from the pandemic era .... if history continues to be written anyway .
