I've been a Maiden fan since I heard their debut album on cassette in 1980, when I was 10. After 43 years, they're still my favourite band. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!

The problem with Maiden is everyone has different favorite songs by them. You can almost pick anything from their catalogue and be mind blown by it. I’m gonna throw “Where Eagles Dare” out there, though, as I haven’t seen it mentioned yet. There’s just something really powerful and badass about that early Maiden classic.

You're right. It is different. Musically, it's a Janick Gers song. Janick joined Iron Maiden in 1990 though his work with Bruce Dickenson who is co-writer. In most Iron Maiden polls I've seen, Still Life is the deep cut recording most revered by Maiden fans. It's the one I've seen referred to most as "favorite" instead of one of the favorites.

Best way I’ve ever heard Iron Maiden fans described is in a spoken word by Henry Rollins: “The most scared I’ve ever been in my life is when my band, The Rollins band opened up for Iron Maiden in the UK: there were set up difficulties that forced the show to start an hour late, which made the crowd irritated to say the least. When we walked out on stage the crowd had already started a Maiden chant, and it hit me then: there are 53,000 currently angry, Iron Maiden fans here and the only thing they see when we walked out: is that we aren’t Iron Maiden.”

Bruce Dickinson went through a divorce before he wrote the lyrics... a rare Iron Maiden 'power ballad' from 1992 (an early one being 'Strange world' from 1980)... American Maiden fans give guitarist Janick Gers a lot of s+++ (he joined in 1990, replacing Adrian Smith), but he did a terrific job contributing this track... Sadly, Steve Harris (bass) also went through a painful divorce in 1993... 'Wasting love' is an honest ode to heartbreak and heartache... I never understood the depth of the lyrics until I went through a painful breakup in my life. Definitely a life-changing and traumatic experience. Bruce Dickinson would separate from his 2nd wife Paddy after being treated for cancer in 2015, his divorce proved costly because he had a new GF... Sadly, Paddy died unexpectedly in 2019 after a "tragic accident".

I feel a disturbing fascination for the song "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter"... another is the forgotten "The Lord of the flies" with the voice of Blaze Bailey. Another band suggestion... the Germans Helloween... with their songs "Forever and One", "A Tale That Wasn't Right", "Halloween" or "the keeper of the seven keys".

I'll help you out with understanding Maiden. First and foremost, Steve Harris is THE legendary bassist. You seem to have picked up on that from a relatively small sample of songs, so good work catching that. They have multiple guitarists. Depending on what era of the band we're talking about, it may be one, two or three people on the electric guitar in a given song. As vocalists go, there have been three. The band started with Paul DiAnno as the vocalist on the albums "Iron Maiden" and "Killers". Based on your other reactions, you may actually prefer his vocals. It's still Heavy Metal, but you hear a lot more punk influence in their early albums. "Phantom of the Opera" (which pre-dates the musical of the same name and is not related to it), or "Prowler" will be good samples from this lineup. They also did some great instrumental tracks "Ghengis Kahn" and "Transylvania" are heavy metal standards now, covered by virtually everyone. Starting with their third album, they took on Bruce Dickinson (Formerly with Samson). He's the most iconic Iron Maiden vocalist, and by far the most talented in terms of range, diction and astounding breath control... he can wail and hold a note for 40+ seconds at full metal scream and not faulter. That's virtually unheard of elsewhere. "Number of the Beast", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Only the good die young", "Fear of the Dark", "Two minutes to Midnight" and "Empire of the Clouds" will give you a good sample of what he can do. However, if you want to really see what Bruce can do, you need to look at his solo albums. Iron Maiden has a "brand image" to uphold, so the band is a bit formulaic. But various members have side projects or solo albums that break out of that mold. That's where Bruce shines. His other unique feature is his energy. Not only is he singing in a way that would make most opera singers pass out from exhaustion, but he doesn't stand still as they do, he's running around the stage, jumping, climbing on things, zip-lining across the stage. It should not be humanly possible to hit, let alone hold those notes while running around. Conventional wisdom suggests you need your whole body to sing like that. Look at Opera singers. They stand in one place, feet firmly planted on the stage with a wide stance, chin up, shoulders back and arms out to control their breath and support those notes. He can sprint across the stage for 2-3 hours, and belt notes while doing a pull-up. He's some kind of mutant, lol... this should be an anatomical impossibility. Blaze Bailey was with them for two albums. I won't lie, he's tone-deaf, lol. I really like some of the songs they wrote at that time. Especially "Virus" and "The Angel and the Gambler", but it's a mediocre vocal performance, and they got very repetitive with the lyrics. That would be fine if Bruce or Paul were singing, because they can improvise and sing the same line differently each time so it doesn't feel as repetitive, but Blaze was kind of monotone and it became monotonous. Blaze isn't actually bad by any means, but he wasn't a fit for the way the songs were written. It's the "Third Singer Curse" you see in a lot of bands, notably Van Halen, but many others as well. He was awesome with Wolfsbane. After Blaze left, Bruce returned to Iron Maiden and remains their primary vocalist now. But the main thing about Iron Maiden, you NEED to see them live. And I'm not talking about watching a live video. You need to be front and center at an actual concert to really experience it. Nothing compares to that. Even the best live videos don't give you so much as a hint as to what a live performance is really like. Every member of the crowd knows all the songs and sings along, which is edited out of most of the videos. There are numerous times when the crowd DEMANDED an encore, the band is off stage, packing it in, the venue is closing, killing the lights, and nobody leaves. Everyone chanting in unison "Play again, play again..." and they have to come back out and do another 3-6 songs. They basically need to factor that into their shows now. Nobody follows them, there is no next act, the show doesn't end until the crowd is exhausted, lol. That's the down-side to be heavy metal gods, I guess, lol. I would recommend you check out Bruce Dickinson's "Tattooed Millionaire", "The Chemical Wedding", "Taking the Queen", "Inertia", "Born in 58" and "Omega"... and for some fun... "Ballad of Mutt" a bluesy song but also a bit of a joke, and "I'm in a band with an Italian Drummer", also amusing as all hell.

Cool Trivia Facts: Bruce Dickinson is a commercial pilot as well. He flies the band's plane, and twice has flown Iron Maiden's jet on political rescue missions. Wrap your head around that for a moment. You're trapped in a foreign land during a political coup, the embassy is locked down or abandoned, the borders are locked down, you're fucked. And the lead singer of Iron Maiden flies the band's jet in to rescue you when your own government won't. Iron Maiden is the best selling band globally, across all genres. Their music can be a bit repetitive, but that makes it very accessible for non-english speakers, giving them huge fan bases in Asia and South America, where most western Recording Artists can't get much of foothold. Their music style gives them access to about 2 billion more fans than most artists can hope to reach. There are Mongolian Goat Herders in mud huts wearing Iron Maiden T-Shirts as we speak, lol. During his solo work, Bruce Dickinson was in L.A. and went to a club. There he saw a local band called "Tribe of Gypsies", who were covering an Iron Maiden song. Without making his presence known, he purchased one of the band's demo albums and talked with the club manager. The next night Tribe of Gypsies played, they came in to find the Legend himself playing one of their songs on the stage. Perhaps the single coolest way to meet your hero, lol. They recorded several albums together after that. And much of his best work came after his bout with Throat Cancer, which would be the end of most singer's careers. The guy is literally Superman, flying through the skies, rescuing people, being an outstanding role-model, demonstrating super-human agility and endurance while singing in ways most talented and highly trained vocalists could never hope to, and the music he makes is so good that all of this other cool shit is just a footnote.
