Dizzy had been a legend in his own time for 40+ years at this point. I think he’s more than happy to give Sando more spotlight to make a legend out of him as well.

I was there and saw this live. This was to me the highlight of the entire concert and in no way does Arturo try to blow away Dizzy - it’s massively disrespectful to say that. I saw this band twice in the UK, once here in London and then next year in Bristol. Both times they were absolutely amazing and undoubtedly the best big band gigs I’ve ever been too.

I really like the duet of two great trumpet players but also the cuban groove was really smooth and Arturo is a phenomenal trumpet player.

This live performance is my all-time favorite trumpet 🎺 playing of Arturo Sandoval. He was surely at his best here! In all his solos he pretty much played interesting jazz phrasing, blazing fast and Cuban music (My fav solo part is so majestic: @6 21min). And also that last double High G at the end caught me by surprise when I first heard it 😅 Well granted Dizzy wasn't at his best but who cares! He s a legend and inspiration to all of us jazz musicians and non-musicians alike.

Sandoval is definitely a great trumpet player, but the language he is using comes directly from Dizzy Gillespie, so there really is no point in comparing the two. If Sandoval was playing something that came entirely from him, then that would be different. In a way, it's like a complinent to Dizzy.

Back in 1947 in NY during a Jazz Fest. he placed his trumpet in the floor trumpet holder and stept on it and bent it up, the show has to continue so he has no choice than keep plying the trumpet like that, then he became famous with his bent trumpet...........
@BopWalk6 жыл бұрын
Gus Conde Wrong, he had his horn stepped on in a party for his wife, that was in the 50s.

@@BopWalk Sat on as somebody fell over while it was sitting on a chair. Also Dizzy tells another story to the Cubans in 1977 on his visit about a maffioso annoyed at him for mistakenly pointing his horn at him on stage. The gangster supposedly handed him a $1000 dollars then took his horn and bent the bell, lol. It's on the DVD "A Night in Havana". heh.

Arturo Sandoval learned from the best of the best. Dizzie lives on in everything Arturo plays, it's a shame people don't care about REAL music anymore. The fake pop shit is nothing. It's a simple cord progression with words, big deal. This and everything that Arturo does is art.
