An eighth trumpeter swan is released into the Oregon wild at Summer Lake Wildlife Area in Oregon on June 29, 2024. It doesn’t seem quite sure about its new home!
Very soon it will join the other seven swans that were released a minute or so earlier and are already checking out their new summer home. Earlier in the video you saw the seven (more adventurous? more curious?) swans- at the top center at that time you could just see a group of large white birds in the distance. They are American Pelicans.
One June 29, 2024, more than 20 young trumpeter swans were released at Summer Lake Wildlife Area to help restore wild swans to the state.
Summer Lake Wildlife Area in south central Oregon is a haven for thousands of migratory birds through the year. As for swans, well, in the winter, both tundra swans from the arctic and trumpeter swans from Canada will be at this important wildlife area as well.
Just before these young swans were released they received US Fish and Wildlife Service metal leg bands and green neck collars (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) with codes unique to each swan. When people report seeing the swans we are able to track each swan, where it goes, if it eventually finds a mate and has a family, learn how long it lives and much more. The neck collars and leg bands do not harm the swans and are designed and sized to be just right for the swans. Tens of thousands of migratory birds have bands that are used for tracking purposes.
Restoring wild trumpeter swans to the state is the project of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Trumpeter Swan Society, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Trumpeter swans had disappeared from the state by the turn of the last century and are being restored through the Oregon Restoration Program.
