What are Sands(Peski)?
Sands are all Soviet Streets, Mytninskaya and Degtyarnaya Streets that cross them, as well as Suvorovsky, Ligovsky and Grechesky Avenues and several other highways. The name comes from a sandy ridge that stretched from Ligovsky to Suvorovsky, passed to the Neva and further along the Okhta. This is nothing but the shore of the ancient sea. Because of its origin, the territory was the highest in the city, from which it was never flooded. Today there is nothing left of that area, except for the unofficial name.
It began to be built up at the time of the foundation of St. Petersburg, is located in the very center of the city, but still retains some provinciality, silence and peace of a separate town.
