1979 was the last year for the Mark V run, which started in 1977. These cars were offered with more options than just about everything short of a Rolls Royce of the era. Absolutely beautiful, and one of the quietest, smoothest driving cars of all time.

That's a Continental Mark 5.... Much larger than the Ford Thunderbird of the time. Ford Thunderbird and Continental DID share platforms from 1967 to 1971, then from 1972 until 1974. Afterwards, Thunderbird was slightly downsized and shared it's platform with the Mercury Cougar.

Modern manufacturers WON'T ever return to actually building something that's serviceable or in any way aesthetically pleasing. The argument is "fuel efficiency" and/or "safety".... Both of which could easily be achieved if, like you mentioned, the manufacturers employed modern materials and SOME of the technology...AND if the average modern person would learn to pay attention while driving. Unfortunately... All of the "modern safety features" of the last thirty years, have made the average Motorist COMPLACENT and feeling a false sense of security.
