Andamans Cork In Bottle For China's Navy Coming Through Malacca: Ex-U.S. Pacific Fleet Intel Head

NEW DELHI: "Unprecedented Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) activity is very dangerous right now," Captain James Fanell (Retd), the former Director Intelligence and Information Operations, Pacific Fleet warns as the U.S. Navy celebrated its 245th birthday on October 13. His public warnings about China's aggressive maritime ambitions in 2014 got him reassigned in the service. Six years later, he sounds the alarm on among other things, Taiwan, saying, "think of a noose that goes around someone's neck and the noose has been pulled very, very tight." The Fellow at Geneva's Centre for Strategic Policy told StratNews Global Associate Editor Amitabh P. Revi that "nations like India, the United States, Japan and Australia in the Quad should all be standing up and telling Beijing, you will regret the day you ever attempt that."
On the civil and military infrastructure push in India's only tri-service theatre command in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Capt. Fanell said "efforts to reinforce and increase the infrastructure act as a barrier to untoward Chinese expansionism in the case of a crisis." He noted the significance of a U.S. Navy’s long-range anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance aircraft, P-8 Poseidon, making a first refuelling stop in the strategic islands in the last week of September under the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), signed in 2016. "Not only does it demonstrate logistical interoperability, it also demonstrates the future of information and intelligence sharing, Fanell said, adding, the interoperability of the two navies from the islands are "critical, like a cork in the bottle for Chinese submarines that come in through the Strait of Malacca into the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean." #IndiaUSNavy #ChinaPLAN #Quad

I see lots of unrest suddenly in Thailand now, with protests against the monarchy there. China has been known to interfere in Thailand's politics. The ruling monarchy has traditionally been aligned with the United States, while the pro-China politicians are anti-monarchy. The pro-China politicians want to cooperate with China in building the Kra Canal which cuts across Thailand, to connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea. This would help China's navy to bypass the Straits of Malacca. I hope that China's influence in Thailand is contained.

The final question on the effectiveness of 'messaging' to China was excellent. And the answer equally significant. I agree with the US Admiral that the economic response to Chinese bullying will prove to be more consequential; long before there is a joint military response. Alas, even on the economic front, India remains far ahead of the rest of the Quad in responding to China. Australia and Japan's stance on the signing of the RCEP next month therefore bears close scrutiny; both by India and the US.

Or else it will be too late and every country in the world will have to pay a heavy price in various ways or even become slaves in their own countries. Chinese growth is very dangerous. They have no rules in their game. Very frightening to see and hear how all the countries are showing a no care attitude except a few. USA needs India, particularly our land assets i.e. Andaman & Nicobar. Australia, like the UK can be pressurized by the large muslim vote bank, to act like a potential 5 column guided from outside (china, turkey, pakistan etc). China is unlikely to attack the ROC with a view to annex. They may attack only to severely damage the ROCs offensive defence capacity. It'll also give them an opportunity to field test their equipment in actual battle conditions, as well as, wave a fist in the world's face.

A military alliance between UK and France was formed in the aftermath of WW2 to prevent future attacks from Germany and USSR and this eventually led to the establishment of NATO in 1949. The Quad is not a result of any military compulsion only the product of bureaucrats getting together for leisurely lunches, expensive dinners, 7 star hotel luxuries with ample opportunity for slothful abstract confabulations. No urgency here to take on the aggressive Han. Only a military disaster will get the political leadership of these Quads kick aside the Babus and get on with the formation of a military alliance against the PRC.

India's military strength is definitely rising and joining the Quad ---- US+JA+AU+IN will definitely be V advantageous . This Strategic Alliance must exercise its presence to deter China as also to assure all other SE nations that their safety and compliance of laws will be enforced for benefit of all. Also India must increase her trade and economic prowess to sustain her strategic and military involvement. Immediately , today, Taiwan's independence appears imperilled . Results of thwarting it will define the Quad. We wait anxiously.

In my view, expand the scope of conflict in the navy because unlike the PLA, their navy is generally more manageable and poorly trained. The US is way better prepared to choke the Chinese, I severely doubt if they will be able to really take on their navy. However, I think China is strangled for good, Koreans have Thaad, American fleets are stationed in Japan and Korea, they are active in Asia. The Indians have them cornered in the Himalayas with sizable numbers. They have made adversaries in ASEAN, more recently Thailand, in my view it would be easier to strangle them and cut their influence to size. With Covid 19, this is the opportune moment, saving face and looking high and mighty is of paramount importance to the Chinese, take that away for good to such an extent when smaller powers in the region can stand up to them. I doubt they will wage full fledged war, those days of open warfare are over. They like their face, take that away and China falls flat.
