Thank you! In 1975-1976 when I was the Maiden, VHS hadn't come out yet. So my dance is on the old reel to reel with no sound. It's so great to see that it is the same dance!!

It’s sad we will never have another high school home game like this again. I graduated in 2010, the last class to get to graduate from this great building and the highlight of the school year was getting to come to these games. I’m sad I’ll never get to do this again and never get to take my kids to a real Anderson home game

My mom and Gene Raines made up this dance for a pep session in about 1950. She was the last singing maiden and the first dancing maiden. Diane Stearns. My dad adored her.

@sneak108 Sadly, The Wigwam is now closed. This was the final pre-game/game in the Wigwam. I'm just glad I was able to pull together a few camera shots and good audio for the sake of posterity. The building has been close since July of 2011. They moved most of the memorabilia to the new high school. It is being cared for by Ron David and Larry Rittenhouse. Ron's worked the score table for decades and Larry was a Gov. teacher Anderson for many years. We're still hoping for something to happen.

Yeah, it’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since I captured this video. That also means it’s been 20 years since I graduated. Thankfully the property around The Wigwam Complex is being developed and on an upswing, so there’s still hope! 🤞🏻 Thanks for watching! 🙂

I hope not. Anderson, imo, has done a good job honoring the roots of the native people who founded the city. As long as they didn't wear brown face, they'll be good.

We are the Anderson Indians, of Anderson, Indiana. Settled by Chief Anderson, of the Delaware tribe. His father was of Swedish ancestry. He established the Anderson settlement in 1798, 18 years before Indiana’s Statehood. The school is named for him, bears his likeness, and this ceremony was developed over the years by his ancestors who still reside here. They even made the headdress and designed the clothing that is worn.

Anderson is anything but a ghost town.You should get around the midwest more often. We're not as strong as we once were, but we're nowhere near the ghost of a factory town that Flint, Michigan has become. We have businesses being built and small manufacturers setting up shop. Flint is removing neighborhoods and land from the city. It's going to take time to bounce back, but we'll be better off and better educated in the end. I'll believe it's a ghost town when I'm no longer fighting traffic.

Do we need to cancel everything that someone doesn’t agree with? This was the last time this was ever performed in this building, which was 11 years ago. For the record, the people “hooting” like drunken idiots are from the apposing team. Myself, my wife, and my father are the people behind the cameras. As a local, we hold a different level of respect for our history. The ceremony has changed and is currently being reviewed for further change. Bottom line, Chief Anderson was a real person, of which the city and school are named after. We’ve been a city for 207 years, and the school has been in place since the 1800’s. We are also one of the very few places where white men were hanged for their atrocities against natives in the 1800’s. We meant no harm with the ceremony, only celebration and respect. The Chief is our cities history, not simply some randomly chosen mascot. However, the other old city high school goes by “The Scots” and uses a stereotypical image of a white Scotsman in a kilt holding a bagpipe. Nobody seems to have a problem with that mascot that has nothing to do with our cities centuries old history.

@@AndersonWigwam if this "ceremony" was not inappropriate then why was it discontinued? You are using two contradictory arguments. And what purpose does it serve having this video up that is just going to deeply hurt some people while also making the people involved, whatever their intentions were, look like clueless racists?

I'm sorry, but the correct term is Native or Indigenous. Indians are from India, besides this whole scenario is a complete misrepresentation of true Native People of this land. Not to mention very stereotypical and ignorant. I am of full blood Native descent and find this very offensive and I am happy the State of Washington decided into law, to ban Native mascots or any likeness of any kind. It's time to end all stereotypes and misrepresentation of people's pride and heritage. Hopefully this school has already found a new mascot and pre game skit to represent themselves, I know laws are starting to change involving Native Heritage and misrepresentation around the United States.
@AndersonWigwam3 жыл бұрын
Being of partial Delaware descent myself, I understand your gripe. But Chief Anderson isn’t just some randomly picked mascot, the city was literally founded by Unalatchgo Lenape Chief Kikthawenund who also held the name “Anderson”, which came from his Swiss father. This school opened in his honor in the 1800’s and his honor has been at the center of it ever since. That is a statue of him in the video, which was commissioned by his family. His family handmade the clothing worn and helped develop the entire show over many decades. The loud “hoo-hoo” and over the top people in the audiences were usually visiting teams or just idiots who didn’t know any better. If we’re to drop Chief Anderson, I guess that means our city has to change our name and remove the bust of Chief Anderson as the main feature of our city crest. But seeing as how we have saved and protected one of the last ancient native mound complexes in the midwest right here within the city limits, that wouldn’t make much sense. Anderson has a proud Native heritage, and you might learn something by spending a few minutes on Google learning about our city before trashing how we celebrate our history.

@@AndersonWigwam having partial ancestry to anything doesn’t make you it. You can have an African ancestor but if that is not how you were raised and you don’t have citizenship/enrolment etc then you are not that. You are not Indigenous just because you have some distant ancestor! As an Indigenous person myself in addition to the other Indigenous person you were responding to, we are both saying that this is racist and not ok. It isn’t for you or any other non-Indigenous settler to say otherwise! Please educate yourself. The American education system has failed you all terribly. You guys don’t even know when you’re being racist or what the difference between cultural appropriation or cultural appreciation even is. Disgusting.
