I find it interesting how polarizing people's opinions are sometimes. One guy thinks a pedal is warmer or more compressed than the other, then the next guy says the complete opposite. What I would say from my own experience is that the clarity, perceived headroom, open, and less distorted Silver Archer works better in most live band settings. It will be more touch sensitive, and sit in a full band mix better than the gold, allowing the guitar to stand out more. I find that although many times as guitarists we gravitate to a little more gain, and thicker sounds, they don't always work best in a band setting when you are fighting all the other frequencies. These pedals are not meant to be distortion boxes. They are meant to be edge of break type pedals that give a boost to the front end of an amp, without altering the sound too much....just giving it a little bit more. They also work well for clean sounds that need just a bit of grit to them when you're digging in. IMHO the Silver for the Win.
@RougeLex4 жыл бұрын
I'm literally fighting between the two and I believe you're correct although I love the gold one I have to admit I like it for the thick tone. Where as the silver one would probably suit me better in a church setting. Having said that I'll probably get both

Great point. There’s a kind of “openness” that I listen for and the silver version has more of it. Both great choices though. I’d probably take the Ikon for really low gain settings where the silver can sound too thin.

I like both Archers! Currently I'm stacking the Ikon with a Wampler Euphoria in the "smooth" setting through a Fender Hot Rod Deville 410. All I can say is, "WOW"! The Ikon's a very smooth pedal that's a great booster that will push a quality pedal with class.

These vids are very informative - because there's only one variable and no hype. Keep them coming please!
@dunebillydave2225 жыл бұрын
Well, there is, arguably, a second variable, since Pete isn't doing a blind comparison. His playing, from one demo to the next may very likely change, either from emotion or fatigue, or from his subconscious expectations of each pedal. Subtle, but we're dealing with subtlety - especially in THIS video.

I've been listening to this video in the background as I'm working. Every time the silver one was on, my ears would perk up and I'd rewind to hear it again. Never happened to me with the gold. @Paul_Lenard_Ewing2 жыл бұрын
@@spidgeb3292 The Gold has nothing to cut thru. Add a drummer and a bass player and it will be a different story.
@jackbinkleymusic2 жыл бұрын
@@Paul_Lenard_Ewing well considering that the ikon has a higher mid hump then yes, it does have something to cut with. More over, one thing I don’t think you realize is that potentiometer resistance varies by each batch of pots, you can boost the treble on the ikon if you feel it’s a bit darker. I believe a more accurate comment would be that the ikon is not compressed hand has a lower volume in the setting it was shown compared to the silver archer at noon
@dannyblau38509 жыл бұрын
Great comparison. I have both on my board right now as always on options. Depending on the amp i'm using, one will be used as an always on, the other as a boost to that. sometimes the always on just depends on the day and the room. You really can't go wrong with either and both are as spot on as you are going to get with either the original silver or the gold. The one notable difference being that you can dime these out to great effect and the originals were never too fond of the dime action.

Ikon for me. I bought one used a few years ago and it was more beat up than I thought it would be. Used gear curse.still works great but a little shaky. The guy who sold it to me apparently got it used himself so this thing was gigged for sure but I just ordered a new one. For me to do that I must like it!! And the old one will be a spare. Ha. That’s how good it is. It’s the klon to me. I have a Tumnus as well which I really like. And the soul food which i used a lot at the beginning of my klon-ism. But I think the gold ikon nailed it. I also heard the Bill F teamed up with rockett for the archers. So there it is!!

They are both nice so let's get that out of the way. But for me I find the Gold Ikon a little more compressed and warmer which I like. The two would probably make a killer dual drive pedal with the ability to select either model on each side, and the option to choose which direction to stack.

I like the ikon's warmth, but that's just my personal preference. Both sound really good. I would equate it to the difference between a jtm45 and a newer style Marshall or for example the JCM 800. Both are killer amps but I find that I personally prefer the cleaner and much warmer jtm45. you can turn the bass down or relish in it, I kind of like the bass/mid quality of the sound, especially with vocals I find it provides a much over all fuller sound. you can go crazy with trying pedals with a cleaner amp too, as demonstrated here, they seem to just work better with cleaner amps. although the jcm takes pedals very well too. that's the great news. there is no wrong answer. just personal preference in this case in my humble opinion. you can't really go wrong either way, this just showcases very well what each does. thanks for a great demo!

Nice comparison but both pedals sound much better going in to an almost clean amp to cause a bit more breakup. I own both and they are very similar to say my band don't care which is on my board. I disagree, the pedal has an internal voltage doubler (9v-18v) so the sound you get playing through a clean amplifier will be much the same as if you're playing it with the amp flat out. Also, Fenders don't tend to break up, the smaller ones do (Blues Jr and Pro Jr) but the Hot Rod Deluxe stays pretty clean.

Living in California with tons of gear and incredible musicians, a bunch of players in early days got many original pedals from BILL still for $279 later $329 and we all have them and sold them. Great pedal just the only way to use the pedal is with Gain between 9clock and noon to get the best sound with volume and tone depending on volume and tone desired THE KLON IS NOT A OVERDRIVE PEDAL it SUCKS. In our opinion is all a hype because today's pedals like the RYRA have a better overall sound and we all after testing many times prefer to the original KLON. Bill still selling the KLON pedal on EBAY claiming is to help a friend and there are idiots paying $3000 for a pedal today. You can buy a killer amp or a Gibson R8 or NOCASTER FENDER or FENDER RELIC STRAT that will really improve your sound. Also when you a great an awesome guitar you will play more and that's how you become a better player. That will making a huge difference in your sound, way more than any boost pedal. I love my RYRA and there's a few other pedals that are great boosts that we prefer to the KLON. Try the Morning Glory JHS, the BMF Effects El Jefe This pedal EL JEFE or the RYRA are incredible sounding. For small sized the TUMNUS and for a close to the original KLON the ARCHER pedal is very very good when comparing to a KLON. Buy a great playing guitar with an awesome amp. The majority of incredible players like Mark Knopfler/Clapton/Robben Ford or Santana aren't using many or any pedals at all, is all in your fingers, your guitar & amp. Get a good guitar Fender tele or Strat or Gibson Junior or Les Paul Traditional or R8 through a Fender/Tone/King/Marshall/Germino/Komet/Bludotone/Glaswerks/Sebago/Morgan/Friedman/Bad Cat/Matchless type of amp and get a RYRA or EL JEFE and tell me what do you thing. The Klon is just like DRUGS because you can't have it, NOW you want it. Stop being fools. Buy a great Fuzz like the JHS KILT or Tone Bender like a ProAnalog MK IV also his a great boost with the gain down, Get a Big Muff or a Eric Johnson Fuzz or Bonamassa or the little green wonder or a tube screamer, get a SUPRO tremolo, Bro UNIVIBE, a MEMORY MAN or a FULLTONE ECHO and then tell me how your sound improved use 3k to your advantage. If you have a shitty sound and now you now using the KLON is going sound even worst. PRATICE PRACTICE PRATICE....
