I’ve seen it twice and managed to catch it in cinemas and I do really love it, I think in time I’ll probably prefer it to in bruge and for it to be my favourite of his films, but for now I still prefer the tightness of in Bruges screenplay. Still hoping one day I’ll see the inside llewyn Davis review but keep up the good vids :)

[Andy H] it's a really tough pick! I think I'm leaning Banshees at the moment but could definitely change

Have not seen this yet so I cannot watch the video, but I plan to stream it over the weekend. I loved Three Billboards and especially "In Bruges" so I definitely have to watch it. I cannot wait for next week. Hope all is well on your end take car.

[Andy H] I hope you enjoy it, Damien! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, given the tonal differences in Three Billboards and In Bruges, but I think this solidified my interest in Martin Mcdonagh going forward

Smashing review lads. I really enjoyed the film also but must admit I didn't catch the theme of it being an analogy for the Irish civil war. I perhaps know too little about the Irish civil war to have caught that. Wasn't taught in UK schooling, at least not in my time.

[Andy H] Don't worry, I could have been way off and talking total nonsense, haha!

It’s not an allegory for the Irish Civil War or an analogy to it. The war wasn’t about silly things. This is a very ignorant take. Would you have the parents of abducted children in Ukraine sweat loyalty to Putin as part of a peace deal with Russia? Should the American revolutionaries have sworn loyalty to the British monarchy at the end of their silly war of independence? Padraic is not a nice fella. He’s a stalker and thug. You have to accept me because it’s what I want, he says and then “if I can’t have you, you must die” his desire to murder Colm was not revenge for little Jenny’s accidental death it was punishment for Colm’s daring to be independent instead of submitting to Padraic’s will. There’s a lot more going on here, but that’s the heart of it.

My take isn't minimising the impact of war and I stand by it. Ironically, I think our readings aren't too dissimilar. I read their natural desire to maintain, reassess, and ultimately destroy their assumed friendships as the parallel to the war. Without political and personal breathing room, the two find a fundamental disagreement. I don't believe my reading to be ignorant at all but we can agree to disagree 👍
