In the first 54 seconds of the song “F U Jack”(2021), Andi powerfully conveys the human experience of heartbreak through an equal use of musical and literary devices that enhances the listening experience to prompt a stronger emotional response from the listener. This is made most clear in the use of the musical concept, texture, in particular, the building up of texture. This allows Andi to use her own life as an example to demonstrate her personal story and her emotional response. In the first verse, a simple arpeggio major pattern is repeated on an acoustic guitar. This symbolises how Andi is lost emotionally and still figuring her personal bearings after going through an emotionally charged event. This is further enhanced by the uneven rhythmic pattern played on the acoustic guitar, going against the simple 4/4 timing structure. At the 20 second mark, the first verse ends and the pre chorus commences and a simple drum beat that is played on the 2nd and 4th beat of each bar can be heard. This beat commonly symbolises a stronger mood as it consistently heard as well as felt stronger for the experience of the listener. Furthermore, there is a tonal shift in the guitar, it shifts from a heartfelt acoustic tone to a sharper metallic tone, achieved through the use of an electric synthesizer. In the commencement of the first chorus, a drum machine is introduced that plays every semiquaver on the high hat as well as a strong bass drum playing a double beat at the beginning of every 2nd bar. Played in unison with the high hat beat. From the pre chorus to the chorus, Andi demonstrates how we as humans need to take charge of emotionally fragile situations by being more confident and confiding in the people around us. Andi also powerfully uses literary devices in the lyrics of “F U Jack”(2021) to further enhance the emotional implications of her personal story brought about in the medium of song. In the first line “How could someone like you mess me up?” A rhetorical question is used to instantly hook the listener and prompt them to relate her story to their own lives. This also helps to establish her overall sense of loss and confusion that is sustained throughout the first verse.As established in the previous paragraph, the song emotionally builds up to a climax in the chorus, achieved through the use of musical textures. The literary devices of her lyrics help to support this notion. In the pre chorus, Andi unites the use of musical and literary devices to suggest that strength is found in the people around you. This is seen in lines such as “I’m crying in my best friend's arms” and “Should’ve listened to my mother.” In the chorus, this emotional climax is reached and portrays feelings of confidence and independence through obvious use of repetition in the lines “F**k you*. The lines are repeated as the first and last lines of the chorus showing that Andi has grown as a person since the commencement of the song. The remaining lyrics of the chorus are used as an extended metaphor to antagonise the focus of the song “jack”. The metaphor focuses on Andi’s heart, giving it the characteristics of a precious object to her, sighted in the line “You didn’t put the pieces back”. This causes the listener to “side” with Andi and share in her anger directed at Jack. Suggesting that Andi is a stronger and more confident individual without “Jack” in her life. In this 54 second excerpt of “F U Jack”. Andi has powerfully captured a human experience that invites the listener to share in her new found feelings of confidence in the face of emotionally targeted events. This causes an emotional response of strength found in unity, not with people such as “Jack” but the other people placed in the lives of individuals living in the 21st century Australian context, “our best friends” and “our mothers”. Andi’s use of musical texture layering and literary devices powerfully captures this idea. Andi encourages the listeners to healthily regulate their emotions by finding comfort in others and ourselves when harm is done towards us. So in conclusion “F U Jack”.
