In this interview André Bertel explains the key points of his seminar in Ahrensburg/Germany 2016 (July 23/24).
Sensei stresses the importance of budo principles in Karate and being able to use all techniques and movements against a non-compliant opponent in free fight and self-defense.
Downing an opponent with a single blow, explosiveness and complete stillness, perfect timing of hand and feet, awareness and knowing how to use the body in an optimal way are further aspects explained in this video. Furthermore, André shares his view on political correctness in today's Karate world.

Very reminiscent of my Shotokan Sensei many years ago, despite their physical differences. Trained out of a church hall and had very few students simply because he pushed everyone to their limits, but it was clear that Karate was his life. I found it hard enough to keep up when I worked days but when I moved to shift work it was impossible - such is life.

he is absolutely correct about that political correctness. Nowadays, people just say, "Let's keep an open mind and learn from other style of karate, or even other martial arts", or if I say that punching without hikite in training is wrong, people will say, "Oh, the Goju Ryu does it without hikite in their kata". That's is not being open minded, but that is being "not focused". So you are not fully Shotokan, Goju, or Shito, what are you? what are your principles? The styles had to sacrifice things based on the choices that the founders made, and you cannot just mix them all. If you are Shotokan, dig more from the correct Shotokan, not from other styles, the same goes for other styles. There may be one or two similar things, but when learning under Shotokan and you do a mistake based on Shotokan principle, you must accept being told that you are wrong. I can't believe when I heard some Shotokan dojos here teach katas from other styles just because those katas are more popular in competition smh

12:42 This. So many instructors ignore the locks and holds of kata and teach some prearranged choreography when it comes to bunkai. I get so fed up when it comes to the latter as its such a waste of time. Great vid.

I have utmost respect for Andre as a martial artist but have some issues with the philosophy. Gichin Funokoshi assembled Shotokan out of parts and borrowed elements from several styles... he did not follow one way... then his son completely changed the style to create a new orthodoxy with greater contrary motion from the hips and deeper stances. Most of this was never road tested in full-contact but made a kind of sense if taken as a gestalt. It doesn't follow that there is a right way suitable for all body types etc.... merely that this approach needs to be absorbed as a whole from the basics up if one wants to get to the core of Shotokan, But there is a world of movement outside of Shotokan...outside of all styles in fact. Still I love that there are those who continually delve into and renew the essence of a given style.

I wonder about the kicking from the seated position. Some say you shouldn't bend the knee past 90 degrees as they are not intended to work as bellows. Perhaps for the younger and lighter students it may be ok but for the older and heavier weighted... is there a chance of damaging the meniscus and knee ligaments in this type of exercise? That caused long term damage to my knees. Any advice?

totaly agree what you say in your interview.A lot of karate clubs these days,Do not train there students to a high enough standard. Not much contact is allowed,This in my opinion is necessary to prepare you for if you do get attacked so you do not go into shock when hit.Plus it helps to condition the body.Sadly most club members these days could not stamp on a paper bag.Perhaps they could take a lesson from you,Or the Kyokushin boys.

I love martial arts and been with Oyama for fifty yrs. Well he died in 94. Trained with Howard Collins, Brian Fitkin, Steve Arneil, other imported experts as well and my life long friend SHIAN Kåre Haugland to his two Sensei 3-4 for Oyama and as I remember the only one in Norway. The philosophy, behavior is much more important to me. Also kempo, tai boksing, boxing. Alongside Yoga. Since 77. I was on my way to the Himalayas now, ten yrs ago... After a course in hot yoga in Phuket. Well I am still in Thailand 🙏 I study martial arts, yoga, nunchacu, tonfa, throwing knife, etc. Not as much but some everyday. I am alone and do my things in solitude. Would like to find a person with same mind set. 100reds hrs meditasjon with the monks. No fighting monks here that I know. One thing I have always been wondering about. In a kumite,,, where do you focus or rest your eyes. I learn in boxing the eyes. But then it's hard to see the feet. I used to could tolerant hard kicks, punch. Due to I didn't see. Ok. Low kick and infight is my best. But can you or anyone tell where to look. Down smack in the face, look face, eyes kick in chest. Broken ribs alot. Ok 😊. You are very good Andre. Shotokan was Oyama first. 4dan. W. Funakosi. Oyama is his Japanese name I was adopted. He is from Korea there he had degree high in some Art. Don't remember. His whole family was. Mas weight was about 80kg, 170lbs. He fought 🐂 I remember 14. Hurt in Mexico. Ok 🙏ok. Bruce Lee 57 kg.??? If I remember correctly. Mas never lost a fight. But before meeting in USA proff Boxer. The day before he was scared. His own words. OSU Andre and thank you for your time and videos 🙏🙏🙏

Dear Andre Sensei. It seems to me, you are teaching often in germany. I for myself are trained in Kyokushinkarate since 1997, in seibukan shorin ryu since two years (wearing a white belt again makes me free to leran new stuff ;) ). Question: Do you think, it is allowed for me to participate next time you are teaching in germany? An if so, maybe i can find a newsletter or something like this for keep an eye on my sheduling, if you visit here again?

I respect all styles of Karate-Do, so you are very welcome. I have many friends in Kyokushin and Seido. The resident Karate Master in my hometown Christchurch -- Hanshi Renzie Hanham -- is a senior 8th Dan student of Nakamura Tadashi Kaicho (Seido Juku), and also trained directly under Oyama Masutatsu Sosai. Actually, I love the variation of karate styles, which I think we should embrace and learn from each other. Kindest regards from Japan.

Karate, when it is trained as budo, regardless of style is the same. I do Shotokan; however, I don't see it as being much different to other ryuha/kaiha. I also believe that the same principles apply to all forms of budo karate. I have friends in all the major styles here in Japan and the respect is mutual and, accordingly, we learn from each other. Kyokushin isnt much different from shotokan. Along with goju ryu kyokushin came from shotokan many of the katas came from shotokan. an example is the pinan and tekki katas and the goju ryu part speaks for itself , tensho sepai. movement can be traced back to another style at one point and time we just to observe closely enough!!
