“The Pines of Rome”. FANTASTIC! As I sat listening with my eyes closed a vision generated by the music began to take shape. Picture a doe and fawn in the dark forest - winding their way through to where the forest breaks and they are at the edge of a large lake. On the opposite side of the lake is a continuation of the Pine Forest with huge mountains as a backdrop behind them. As the deer edge up to the lake for a drink, the sun begins to rise behind them illuminating the top of the mountains. As the music continues to get louder the sun’s rays begin to creep down the mountainside. Then the pine forest is illuminated and finally as the music swells to a final crescendo, the sun races across the lake to the doe and her fawn giving them pause to raise their heads and look over the lake. BEAUTIFUL! (Reminds me of Disney’s Fantasia.)

A real conductor lets the music speak for itself and does not need 200 trumpeters to overwhelm and bludgeon the audience. But that is Andre Reiu's specialty, vulgar extravaganza schlock. His holding his violin and bow but doesn't play more than 10 notes reflects his attempt to copy Johann Strauss and Willi Boskovsky using the "stehgeiger" style of conducting an orchestra while holding his instrument, an empty gesture. He is playing too fast. This is a march, not the Boston Marathon. The bass drum is playing so fast I can only see Roman Legionnaires running backwards in a rout of defeat. Go watch George Pretre conduct this and see how a real conductor performs this.
