Great talk. The way the green movement keeps lagging behind and tries to stop urbanity is very real over here in the Nordic countries as well. I also like how the talk was just that - a talk. Not a powerpoint presentation.

Gustav Löwgren You are supporting world government schemes to confine populations and don't even know it. To learn more about Agenda21/2030 visit this website and read more about the evil Mr Duany who admits it is fascism. Go to granitestatefutures.org search on his name.

Really enjoyed this presentation. I'm curious as to what the solutions are to issues of nutrient cycling in highly dense areas such as Manhattan? As of now Manhattan is no better than a CAFO in regards to handling the nutrients flushed down the toilets everyday. Piling it on a train to dump in a landfill in Alabama is not a solution. What are optimal densities that would allow nutrient cycling to occur? NYC has incredible socioeconomic diversity (or it used to anyway) but surely there is a capacity limit? Would love to see farms such as "le ferme du bec hellouin" become the standard for homes in Sub-urban and Gen-urban regions. It grows enough food on just a couple acres for a small village! Imagine an entire village of farms just as productive!

Have always liked AD - glad to see he has a sober view of the environmental priorities we as a people face, and the tradeoffs that it takes to achieve it.

Very eye opening! Andres seems to challenge the assumption that in order to raise a family, you need to move to the suburbs. That’s off the topic of the environment, but maybe not.

@@new_hampshire Urbanism in a free country is one of the most capitalistic settings you can get, because you can actually have more choice as to your personal economy, instead of being forced to be in a car and live in suburbs you don’t want. Our founding fathers lived in cities, for goodness sake, and they were more pro-capitalist than most of Europe. So no, urbanity and communism are not the same. Communism destroys the city.

@@DakkogiRauru23 I’m sorry but anything that is forced onto you by government using your tax dollars is communism. Some of us do not want to live in cities in fact most of us so if you wanna live in a city go ahead but don’t force my town that wants to be rural into being a city. Government is not the one to force choices on people because then it’s not a choice.

@@new_hampshire Well that’s exactly what Mr. Duany was talking about. You are supposed to live where you want. If not cities, then in a village, or the suburbs. The problem right now is that there is almost nothing but suburbs, and cities that aren’t built for people. You know why? Because government made it illegal to make anything else. New Urbanism’s approach to that is anti-regulatory. If you want to set up a business space in your suburban house, there should be no reason for it to be illegal. Right now, it is, and the result is disastrous. Government is the problem, and so government’s role is to take a massive step back, so that normal American people can get things done again, wherever they live.

@@new_hampshire You also have a misunderstanding of communism, and the use of force. In order for something to be communist, it must be a cessation of all personal and private economic activity to be reorganized and controlled by the state. That murder is illegal isn’t communism, for example.

"Damn it i have a right to breath and exist!" I think I'm testament to what Duany explains so well as the excesses of enviro-theology cult. After 50 years of earnest adherence to the faith I'm done now. Done with the inherent self loathing, apologizing for mere existence, the dour and pessimistic outlook, and fear of future, the negativity, the mentality of scarcity. Stop telling me how to live! I'm so done I might even start just trashing my empties and not sorting my plastics and cardboard curbside! Love Duany though.

@@new_hampshire Seems more like a successful businessman to me. Communism is spending a ridiculous amount of taxpayer money on roads, roads, roads... while not allowing people to do what they see best fit with their own land, by forcing them into ridiculous property line setbacks, restricting use, etc - what he's talking about is a return to civility, and unleashing the marketplace to build the type of places people actually want to live in.
