LECTURE NOTES: The only one of the Op. 10 sonatas that has four movements. -----------1st movt: sonata--------------- 1.a la breve: counting 2 in a bar 2. @3:18 starts with an upbeat. A variation of the Mannheim rocket. 3. MONOTHEMATIC thinking: almost everything can be derived from the first 4 notes. E.G. @5:02, @6:30, @6:46, @7:17(upper voices playing inversion) 4.@9:40 Scarlatti invented this hand-crossing. 5. Beethoven always reserves the sub-dominant for something special, such as this coda @10:58. Like a string quartet repeating the same 4 notes. --------------2nd movt: ternary----------------- 6. largo e mesto: broad (slow) and sad 7. @15:55 Liszt's temp rubato tree 8. exposition-death, development=resurrection. 9. @18:43 Shubert's nod to this in hid B flat major sonata. 10. @21:16 coda --------------3rd movt: minuet & trio----------------- 11. @23:36 does anyone else hear the sunny part of the 1st movement of the Mozart D minor piano concerto? --------------4th movt: rondo-------------- 12. @29:12 when Beethoven writes in unison, it's rhetorical. 13. @31:12 Beethoven's F-sharp major sonata does have a nickname though, "A Thérèse"~😉

I dont think it is dark at all. But it does dig at the deepest levels. Line 36 second bar is at the transition Of thought itself. Language and thought together. Stepping down into the platform of memory.

To my understanding, playing that grace note in the first movement as two quavers was usual in Beethoven's time, it was just a way of writing an apoggiatura. I'm not sure about the sources, thought, but I've heard of it several times.

You are absolutely right. Look no further than the last movement of WAM A-Major sonata -Rondo alla Turca. Nobody plays it like what Sir Andras Schiff suggests here. I have highest respect and love for Sir Andras Schiff's art but he's not always right. Here he is WRONG.

The largo e mesto is a breakup song to me - i hear a wicked fight between two lovers. Seriously. (Sorry Andras, Ludwig.)

kzbin.info/www/bejne/opekqGlvaNeMiLM I'd like to learn Mr Schiff explanation of playing appoggiatura here in Mozart as everybody does but pontificating nonsense in IDENTICAL notation of Beethoven's op 10 no 3 at 5.48 min.

Andras Schiff is WRONG at 5. 48 comments. I'd ask him how he would play Mozart's final movement of K 331 in a.k.a Turkish Rondo. Same notation, NOBODY plays it like Mr. Schiiff pontificates. That's NONSENSE. We all know that in Beethoven times that was the appoggiatura notation and nobody except Mr . Schiff plays the abomination he indicates.

As I remember the great Sviatoslav Richter played it like Schiff suggested. It is no proof about what is the right way, but Andras Schiff was not the only one who played it lik that. Beside that, Beethoven is not Mozart.
