I knew Andras Schiff's name by looking at records but I had never listened to him nor to Bach's Inventions (I know almost every other keyboard works). It's a pity I'm discovering his playing only now but... better late than never ! Magnificent. It's the kind of very delicate performance that I love on Bach's music. And who cares if they were "exercises" ? Many pieces by the composer are apprently labelled as such and that's probably why he was despised for almost centuries., before being discovered again in the middle of the 20th century - maybe better appreciated than he had ever been... These inventions - performed this way - are really beautiful music, with this unique talent for counterpoint. Yohann Sebastian Bach was too humble, probably.

Phrasings are how the performer communicates the beginning middle and ending of a musical thought. This is accomplished by a combination of dynamics and small silences placed between the notes.

As for articulation, if you see a Bach score, he hardly ever writes any indications besides notes. 2 things - there was a consensus on Baroque playing style so anything Bach wrote would be redundant (generalising here) but this has now been somewhat lost to the ages perhaps aside from historically informed performances. It also means that the performer is free to interpret how he pleases.

Where in the world did you find a copy of the first invention with those triplets? Sounds wonderful... but surprising. I love the way one can play Bach in so many different ways and still hear the simplicity of the human heart. Thank you for being you dear. CVD
That's the beauty of great music and being human in that everyone can interpret their own meaning from the same source. Think of reading someone's facial expression and how many ways it can be subtly interpreted - a smile can be a grin, a smirk, beaming, while it can also be forced and hiding something. While the fundamental is there, it speaks to everyone individually.

He's a great pianist, but his embellishments are too much...of course, this is subjective...also, he seems to be a but too rhythmically slack for my taste. I much prefer Alicia's and Martha's rhythmically tighter approach to Bach, although either of these ladies didn't (or dont) play a lot him.
