A young Gene Okerlund was the announcer/interviewer there (before both he and Andre later migrated over to the WWF, along with a lot of other wrestlers Vince McMahon lured away). Anyway, in that first tv interview I saw, Okerlund was asking Andre all those same kinds of questions: his size, his custom-made shoe and jacket size, and all that; and Andre accomodated him. It really is unfortunate that so many in society gawk at people who are of unusual size just as they gawk at a disabled person with an unusual walk (and then all the questions come, "How did you get that?" etc). Society has so much to learn!

Andre was a good fellow..my dad used to run a bread route back in the late 70's and seen him jogging by..he came to the store my dad was working and one of his trainers ran in and came out with a gallon of milk..my dad gave him a box of honey buns and he ate the whole box and drank th gallon of milk in seconds..he shook his hand and said thank you to this day dad says he's never seen a man even close to his stature..he said he was super polite and respectful..RIP Andre.

Supposedly, that was a drinking contest in a hotel bar, the bartender had a glass for each participant and he put the bottle caps in each drinkers glass to keep track. Second place drank "only" about 60 beers, then Andre had to hurry off to the arena to wrestle.

When I was growing up, I always heard of andre. He retired to my small, middle of no where town in ellerbe nc. His ranch is right up the road from my house & as a teen I snuck onto the property when it was for sale to look at his house. He had a beautiful ranch. I also remember seeing his friend frenchie after Andre passed at the gas station in town, always smoking a cigarette indoors. He's the only one who got away with that 😂 also my uncle was good buddies with Andre and has a picture of them together . .. our museum has his boots and more items of his. It is awesome. RIP Andre

It was late 80s I was driving Taxi in Las Vegas and I got a radio call late one night to go down the ramp in the back of the Thomas and Mack Center. Sure enough Andre the Giant and his manager jump in the back of my taxi. His manager talked the whole time and Andre just seem to smile to himself he had a beautiful aura about him like a gentle creature. I'll never forget that.

I was about 14 years old in the mid 70s and I went to a wrestling match in Winston-Salem, NC where Andre was wrestling that night. I went to the area where the wrestlers came out and got next to the curtain. Andre stuck his hand through the curtain while he was peeking out. I met him at the Stampede Pavillion in Calgary in the 70's, He was standing in front of the doors the wrestlers come out of, arms crossed across his chest, VERY imposing. A ten yr old kid shaking looks up at him and asks," Mr Giant, may I have your autograph please? He looked down at me from the ring he was watchin, gruff look on his face. Broke into a huge smile and reached his hand out to me, I tried to pass my program and pen to him, he pushed them out of the way . I wasn't sure what he wanted, the person to his side told me he wanted to shake my hand. I stuck my hand out as his enveloped this young lads hand, and signed my program. VERY cool gentleman.

I met Andre in 1978-79 in Bham, Al., at an automotive shop I working at. My boss called me over and introduced me to him. I am a tall, big guy myself, but he towered over me. When we shook hands his hand swallowed mine. He was very nice and polite. Side note: I despise Letterman!
