Andrea HAS done opera on stage, he did Werther in Detroit,he has done La Boheme in Sardinia, Tosca at Torre del Lago. He use a microphone in these huge arenas, of course he does, as do Domingo, Villazon, any tenor you care to mention, even Pavarotti. He does not use a microphone in operahouses, he has proved this time and again, but this myth will persist. He may not have the sheer volume of Pav, but his technique and quality of voice is as good as any and better than most current tenors.

Actually, Bocelli HAS gone onstage in costume several times to sing full operas and done very well at it. The first opera he did I believe was Macbeth, playing the role of Macduff, and the critics loved it. He's also played key roles in several other operas.

whats impressive is that he also has conquered two very famous roles of the French repertoire: Werther and Carmen! he's not exactly an opera singer, but I still love him!

I think I'd have to go with Caruso as my second favorite classical singer. don't get me wrong, I love Pavarotti, but his singing is heavy in my mind.
