This is an exciting and well-interpreted scene. It is highlighted by two arias intelligently and dramatically interpreted by the principles. Bravos all around.

Massard steals the show here....and I hope the great man had a happy 99th birthday on Thursday. I am a big fan of Giordano, the best of the Italian opera composers of this period after Puccini, I think. "La Cena delle Beffe" in particular should be heard more often.

Robert Massard must be the oldest male french singer, I posted this extract for his 99th birthday (August 15th). The oldest french singer is the soprano Jacqueline Silvy (who celebrated her 100th birthday on August 21st, and whose husband the tenor Gustave Botiaux turned 98 years old on July the 14th)

Massard is quite nasal in his vocal production here and it is making him sound so thin and infertile. This is the same voice and baritone that as on the 1964 Carmen recording with Maria Callas as Carmen and there were discrepancies in his vocalism then.

Massard's interpretation of "Nemico della Patria" is outstanding. The ability to get the dramatic message across far exceeds the vocal limitations. These may and do happen to the best singers. The real talent is to perform well regardless of the limitations. Even the most gifted singers have off-days. Dealing with adversity is the litmus test of a true artist.
