Andrea Wright: The Face Behind Delcita

When it comes to roots theatre in Jamaica there are two leading lights; the stages produced king & queen Shebada and Delcita. After what seemed to be a less than amicable shake-up in 2012 at stages, the black faced character packed up and left and is now on a journey of her own.
The woman behind the face is guidance counselor and actress Andrea Wright who joins us right now OnStage to tell us about the demise of the beloved Delcita.

Stages did not "call" for Delcita... Paul O. Beale introduced Delcita Coldwater to stages after Andrea asked to get back into stage acting... The management of Stages knew NOTHING about the character so Beale had to work overtime to convince the management to take her on. Beale then wrote Di Driver with Delcita because Stages' management thought it a better idea to put her in a show with Shebada... Those are the FACTS...

Thank God you retired that Delcita character. There was nothing funny about a supposedly intelligent black woman wearing black face feeding the stereotype that black is ugly. The Delcita character was entertaining to a certain extent but may the black face characterization never find a place in Jamaican theatre ever again. Our blackness is to be celebrated and not ridiculed!

I've had an embarrassing situation with this "actress" I don't like negative but just to speak up,,,, she and other team members were in St ann at ultimate jerk centre, my colleagues and I were there having lunch, being a fan and a very serious fan I mean I missed a show in ochi and headed to St Elizabeth to watch it the following week that's how crazy of a fan I was so of course when I saw her and jucky jam I went over nd asked for a photo with them. Jucky was so funny giving jokes as usual and was ready to take the pic with me n my frenz but delcita fanned us off with the hand then hissed her teeth, I thought she was joking so I yelled at her "dell dell" and she mumbled and Continued. I've never watched another play never, whether with her or anyone else.. I felt insulted it made me realized it wasn't worth watching this hipocritical person.. maybe she had a bad day but hey, as an educator/counsiller should be professional. Good luck to you but I'm turned off and can't be a fan ever again.

It can't be acceptable to alleviate your bad days on others. She realized that we were fans (not her family friends or associates) hence could have dealt with it differently.
