The fabric you made at the end with your ice dyed wool was by far my favorite. You can see the soul you imparted to the cloth with your love and intention. Wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to put this video together. I am being gifted my aunt's full size loom and have been getting nervous thinking about my idea for a hand dyed garmet line. This video makes me feel so much better about the feasibility of it all. Cheers!

Andrea you are wise beyond your years. Gosh the whole conversation about 'waste' and using scraps is something I ponder A LOT when it comes to crafting. I'm the same when it comes to wanting to make sure you put all the yarn to use and 'create the perfect project'. But you are so right it's about the fun of making; the product is just a result of that experience. Beautiful work!

I just discovered your awesome work and this is the second video of yours that I've watched. You mentioned about how you're not a sewist, And I wanted to offer one small piece of advice that I noticed in your video where you were rescuing the scrap yarn. You had your left hand pulling the fabric as you sewed and that's one small detail that all the sewing advice will probably not give you... Don't pull the fabric behind the needle. Let the sewing machine feed the fabric, only push it and guide it from the front. Another quick tip, don't watch the needle, watch the fabric in front of the needle so you can guide it accordingly. Happy sewing!

What a fabulous project to get loose with your process! I haven't seen many videos on Saori style weaving and I am really impressed with how easily the prepared warps go onto the loom. Now that you have been at school for a semester and doing more complex weaving structures do you still enjoy Saori-style weaving? I am tempted to get one of their looms as I am a color and texture person and have no interest in complex structures.
@AndreaAlexander3 жыл бұрын
I promise I'm not sponsored by Saori at all, but I REALLY do love their pre-wound warps 😂 They really do make warping/weaving feel totally effortless, especially these huge warps where the weaving seems to go on forever! And yes, I absolutely still love Saori-style weaving!! My first semester of weaving at FIT was very focused on "perfect/consistent" weave structures and honestly, changing my headspace from Saori weaving to this kind of weaving was not easy in the beginning. I felt limited by the expectations to create something "practical" that meets a teacher's expectations, which is very opposite to the Saori philosophy and how I'm used to weaving, so I really struggled at first to find any joy in my in-class projects. I had to convince myself to start thinking of these two activities as completely different creative experiences. Like yes, they're both weaving, but they just involve totally different mindsets and philosophies and techniques and etc. Once I could see my school work as totally separate from Saori, I found my groove and now I'm excited to take more and more complex weaving classes. I absolutely want to continue Saori-style weaving on the side, and both practices will inform one another! Sorry for the long rant, I hope it made sense 😅❤ If you already have a loom, you don't necessarily need a Saori to enjoy this kind of weaving practice because you can just ignore all but two harnesses and you have the exact same thing! The pre-wound warps are a huge plus, though 😅

Wonderful and inspiring video, Andrea. I’m going to do this too. 😀 Is it ok to mix a cotton warp with wool weft? What does it come out like?
@AndreaAlexander3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! I hope you have fun with it 🥰 For my project, I used a 100% cotton warp and wove with a whooooooole bunch of different yarns for my weft (cotton, wool, acrylic, silk, blends, etc) and the fabrics turned out totally fine because I only either wash my fabrics by hand or on cold/delicate wash cycles. If I were to toss these fabrics into a very hot wash, the yarns would shrink differently (the wool will shrink the most) and create some funky textured fabrics, which can be REALLY fun if you're into experimentation! But if you want to mix fibers and play it safe, stick to cold washes and it'll turn out fine ☺
