Great video Andrea. I am a lover of books too. I go to a thrift store where they stack the books. Then they take out a ruler and measure the stack. I pay .15 cents an inch.

I just bought and read the Konmari book and it was so fascinating I can't wait to go home and start tidying up. I feel like now that I know what to do I can finally make progress.

When we started our book collections there was no internet so I've been happy to get rid of much of my reference library. Novels I've loved and pretty coffee-table books are harder to let go of.

Decluttering books might be one of the hardest things for a homeschooling mama to do!! It seems I've gone through ours about once a year and there's always many to donate. I just love these videos!

I have loads and loads of books (lots are very old and I've never read them) and an having trouble decluttering them. Really like what you said about would I buy this book today. I'm going to use that idea now!

Wow, so amazed at the going out pile. Oh, and I saw quite a few titles that we also keep. My children don't really put the books back the way I like them either, so yes, the bookshelf does become a little overcrowded and messy here as well. I am so glad that you pointed out how books are a little different when it comes to decluttering them. We too have a LOT of books. I don't know if I'm ready to do a large purge of my books just yet, but I have been parting with them one here, one there type of thing as we go.

Brilliant job! I did book decluttering this week and got 540 to clear. In context, I only have two children and I don't home educate! You really can't tell that I've taken books away. Books are my downfall! Thanks for sharing all your organising tips, they really make sense to me and help me declutter :-)

This is the category I have been avoiding.... But after seeing your video, I feel that it is possible. You did a great job! And asking whether you would buy the book again today is the best question for this. Now's the time to declutter my books.

I have 'my own' books down to my top 15 (including 2 bibles and one 'book of psalms') When I say 'my own' - I do not include my daughter's (she has easily over 1000!), my Mom's and my husband's books. My Mom is downsizing her book collection as well. But it feels good (and reduces my anxiety) to have my own collection down to under 20 :-)

I love books as wel! This question might have been answered before and I missed it but I was wondering if you ever see your family moving into a larger home?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog8 жыл бұрын
We decided early on that we'd like to avoid borrowing a significant amount of money, if possible. That means we're just going to make things work as they are for now. I have no idea what the future holds, but we really like our little house and several of our children were born here so we're not all that eager to move. Plus, we live in a small town where large houses aren't sitting on every corner waiting to be bought anyway. We've lived in this house our entire marriage and it's more likely that we'd add on to it than that we would sell it and move elsewhere.

I'm in the process of decluttering with the KonMari method too! I LOVE the question "Would I buy this again today?" I think I'm going to have to go back through ours with this mindset! How are you handling Tom's books? My husband has books from seminary that he keeps holding onto, but he isn't even a reader, and hasn't touched them since graduation. lol
@TheMillsFamilyVlog8 жыл бұрын
That's funny! Tom has a collection of books of church history/patristic writings. He also likes to collect books on religion that he disagrees with. He devotes much less time to reading than I do, but I know he likes having them anyway. I know him well enough that I felt comfortable making the decision about his books, too. There were a couple I wasn't sure about. I set those in a separate stack to ask him about when I was done. He gave me the answer I thought he would on each of them. I'd rather risk keeping something he didn't want than discarding what he did want. If space is a concern, my method has always been to look at the pile of whatever it is and start putting back the favorites first. Working this way, we stop when the basket or shelf or whatever is full and we feel very comfortable that our favorite, most important things are there and we're confident getting rid of anything left over.

I got rid of about half my books 2011. I decided only to keep the books I got from my grandparents from the 1920's, books special to my children, my mother's cookbooks and about 20 leather-bound books. I only read books on my Kindle now.

how do you manage computer time for the kids?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog8 жыл бұрын
This video explains our privilege system which covers computer use: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3jOiI2gad9_lc0 It doesn't apply to our little kids. Sophia plays games or watches cartoons on KZbin in the mornings while we do school. Some days she watches for an hour or so. Other days she doesn't watch at all. We're probably less restrictive than some families, but we feel like we build lots of important activities into the day so if they have free time we're fine with them filling it how they like. Tom has a business in computer repair now because of his love of playing games when he was young. He had to learn how to keep his computer running and he channeled that drive into a career!

I skooch all my books out a little over the front edge of the shelf and use another book to push them evenly back lined up with the front of the shelf. It looks so nice and tidy to have them all even like that. Sometimes I store things behind them if I need to. OCD.
