Just finished watching about an hours worth of your instruction/class room talks and I have a new respect for the nuances of song writing. I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to some of my old favorites the same way again, which is a good thing. I guess I never knew what I should be listening for in a technical way and would always let the emotion of the song take me away, much like you just did for me with kaleidoscope. Fortunately, you walked me through the technicals before hand so I could enjoy it as deeply as you felt it when you performed it. Such moving and authentic lyrics...I can tell there is a very meaningful story (to you) behind the song..as well as a universal message that many can relate to. Nonetheless, you're a great teacher. Thank you for the brand new set of ears!!!

Such a great song! I love that we got to get the lesson on the motifs, and then you wrapped them up in the gift of a song. Thank you for sharing your treasures!

I like the way you sang the word "kaleidoscope", really rang out and stuck with me, probably because of the way the pitch dropped drastically on that last syllable. Your lessons are so valuable and I'd like to give thanks for sharing your knowledge✌️

Amazing song! I love the warm melody and the way you convey the emotion in the phrasing as well. As someone else mentioned, the way you sing the word kaleidoscope is really great. Thanks so much for being so open about how you write your songs. I’ve been following your insta for a while now and you have helped me so much. Thanks so much and happy upcoming 2024! How cool is it that this vid is being watched and commented on 15 years after you first posted it :)

The keyword to answer you is tension. You can create tension to get the listeners ear to anticipate a change. The first obvious way to do this is using silence wisely. You can play the verse, and stop any sound at the end of it, as long as you feel is enough (neat timing helps though) and then start with the pre-chorus (same for chorus). Another way is using dominant chords at the end of each section. You can then change the key if you want to, resolve to the original, prolongue the tension...

I bought that book a few years back, funny to find your channel by chance. I thought it had some great techniques to writing lyrics, maybe I'll go back and look at it again since my songwritings and playing progressed since then. Great playing by the way.

Wow you are really talented. I like the sound of your voice in this video. You can sing! Sounds to me like a singer from the 90's, kind of like Dido style or Vanessa Carlton. You really know the elements of songwriting. I noticed the elements you changed in the melody in the second verse so as to keep the song interesting and the audience engage. I really like how you ended the first chorus. The shape of the melody reminded me of Demi's Skyscraper: "Only silence, as I'm watching...". I really aspire to be like you and have the opportunity to work in the music industry. I've read passages of your books from the library. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the world.

If I decide I want songwriting lessons (just learning guitar so not ready yet), I'll definitely consider paying for these. You can tell she's a cut above. Even though I don't think her song is a hit, it has all the elements necessary. It just have that 'it' factor that separates a good song from a hit song. But this is as good as any of Avril Levigne's good but non-hit love songs, imo. I could see someone buying this song and recording it.

razerfish i think niche fame is more rewarding and in the end, when the dust settles on this generation we will remember the artists, not the pop stars. Unless money is the motive but that's depressing

The melody on this one is great! Maybe you should rewrite this and do a bit more repetitions lyric wise in the chorus and try to convey only one emotion in the entire song. This one is conveying two emotions i think, the one whos still afraid and restrained and full of grief about the past and one thats already letting go and uplifted. Both in the chorus... Maybe rewrite this and only do the letting go and uplifted emotion in the chorus. : )

I think, you missed something in your explanation. that's emotion and intention. if we don't mind these things, the other things are totally useless. it'll be not working.
