I was very young when I saw Piss Christ for the first time yet the power of this image aroused my empathy and I immediately “got it”. The way modern society including the likes of Jesse Helms were dishonoring the principles Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount. I wasn’t a sophisticated art critic nor am I today but now that I hear him explain how he learned at an advertising agency how to condense messages for maximum impact I realize why the piece instantly affected me and has to this day. When I saw Sister Wendy Beckett speak about it and realized that her understanding of Piss Christ expressed my feelings exactly. As poetry is to long form writing, art goes right to the bottom line and to the heart. I think my tax money was well spent and to Mr. Serrano I say, we’ll done, sir❤

He seems surprised that such an image would muster controversy which is naive at best and shrewd at worst. Nevertheless, if you can move past the knee jerk reaction and invest in his claim that he wasn't trying to be blasphemous, I feel like you could make an argument for Piss Christ being an earnest exploration of death and the purifying rite that is Christ's execution. When a person dies, the muscles release and the bladder empties and the act of urinating could be a symbol of cleansing the body. Given that Christ's death is the cleansing of humanity's sins, I think that the connection is pretty apt.

Well if you look at the chronology of the artwork (with the body fluids without any religious inconography) and the events, there is a consistency and not an absolute will to seek controversy. At that time he also was a nobody, so his work was not suppose to make such a noise. The controversy didn't occur immediately too. Also Piss Christ was one artwork amongst a series of photos submited for the Awards in the Visual Arts. Postmodernism. You can tell he was influenced by Punk in general like Crass and Vic Vale of Research Pubs. I wouldn't say it's blasphemy though. I think he's just experimental and a genius. It doesn't mean he's irreligious. It's really just a joke. Christians worship the crucifixion and I really see no big difference.

Hi, when people make the effort to comment we try to answer to this contribution, this is just a way to consider them. Of course anyone can have an opinion on any artwork or artist, especially when it is divisive or controversial like this one. But we can't tolerate agression, insults or just hate. Plus, some commentators are obviously just reacting to the title without having watched the video. We try to make these videos with details, we try to go deep in the explanations and bring value. And it takes a lot of time to produce. Artists also take their precious time to give us this information. So comments should have a minimum of consideration in regard to that. Whether it is against the work or not. Just throwing insults or dirty comments doesn't bring any value to anyone. Thank you for your comment, we hope you understand our position.

@@AnNgo-uk1gf If this is your choice and purpose and that it has foundation, so be it. Though receiving threats is not pleasing to anyone ; even if some can have a high threshold to those attacks. I'm not sure that Andres Serrano was really happy about this controversy 35 years ago and also to have his whole artwork reduced to a single one. But sure, with time he made it a strength. We believe that art can help us understanding each other, wether people are against a specific artwork or not. It should thus allow us to front some conflicts peacefully.

@@Ourchoices alright well, though my pieces are not as controversial and I am not famous at all, if I ever become famous, I know not to let you interview me, but yes that is my choice--and I suppose it is your choice to respond the way you do as well. I just know that if I received negative comments or even threats, that if a third party began going against the threats asking if the people even watched what I said, I would ask them not to host me anymore because of that attitude (though some contract probably exists saying the channel has the righrs to post). Any reaction, even an attempt on my life, would be what this field is all about in my opinion.

Again, people are free to express negative opinions on any artists on this channel. But there is a difference between negative comments and threats, as well as between critics and insults. We prefer to draw a line between them. We never speak in the name of the artists we interview. We just recommand openess and respect. If people are posting comments publicly, they should also accept "to receive a comment on their comment". It goes both ways. And that's often a problem with people who just throw insults or threats, they rarely accept an answer to their comments.

@@Ourchoices As to whether or not he watched the video I couldn't say and this is an old this guy mentioned. I think he has a fair point though, even if it was Andres intention to get people simply riled up (I don't think so, and I think he had good intentions.) With Immersion, many Christians have looked at it as blasphemous, but some have thought that maybe it wasn't meant to be blasphemous and points towards how God's Son stepped done onto the human plane and into human filth. There was a Danish man who drew a drawing of Mohammed, and it was in such a way that he was bomb and about to blow up. He just meant to communicate a point, but his life was in great danger. I think that's less disrespectful than putting on icon of God in a jar of piss. So I think Tony has a great point.

The Pope clearly doesn’t know of the blasphemous art he made. Whoever picked him to be honored works not for God but for the devil. The Pope has all kinds of things to do and depends on his bishops for help bringing events together. There’s no honor in blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ. Holy Mother Church does not honor evil, nor glorify sin. The Pope sadly has been betrayed by his own and is caught in the middle of media mania concerning this moment where two speak the same language and greet each other as if they’re comfortable with each other (naturally so when you speak the same langue).
