Andretti has been seeking an entry into Formula One for a while now, and they initially wanted to join the grid as soon as possible, so they were looking at a 2025 entry. But when it became clear that F1 wouldn’t entertain this they quickly switched to a 2026 entry and filed an official entry, which got accepted by the FIA. But then F1 and Liberty Media completely shut the door on them and denied any entry from Andretti or another team until further notice. And that was the end of it you might think.

It still is 12 teams. The breakdown in all of this is about Formula 1 only paying up to 10 teams. So by the current model 2 teams, if they still had 12 teams on the grid, would receive 0 revenue at the end of the season regardless of whether or not they actually scored points. Williams and Haas would already be out of Formula 1 if 2 other teams were currently competing. Works Teams are a major asset to Formula 1 because they are the underdog and are the giant killers. Thats what made Formula 1 exciting. Jordan did this for years. Benetton and Force India did it as well. Mecachrome and TWR Arrows and others have done it as well. Formula 1's problems revolve around the shift from Works Teams to Manufacturers Teams. Now that Manufacturers Teams run the grid, those Manufacturers pay the team principals to limit losing as much money as possible. So either the FOM and FiA rewrite policy or the sport will fail due to antitrust. Its not that hard to figure out.

@@joshtheking1772 antitrust would only apply of FIA were the only regulatory body for motorsport and the categories under its wing were the only racing categories in Motorsport. With is very far from the reality, as we have many other federation and racing categories that are quite successful and are not under FIA wing, and also have their own set of restrictive regulations. F-1 was always a manufacturers Motorsport, it always had manufacturer's teams, indeed the most successful team in F1 history is Ferrari, a manufacturer's team. And when the manufacturer didn't had the inclination to have a team under their name, they would partner with a team, becoming a stock holder and essentially making that team paetlyt own, like McLaren/Honda, McLaren/Mercedes, Williams/Renault, Williams/BMW, etc. They would still have their hands on the regulatory part of FIA, and still steer the teams they worked with towards the direction they wanted or the company would loose their engine supplier and the money invested by the engine manufacturer throw in the team. Most of the truly works teams were off F1 by the the mid 1980s

The problem with 12 teams is that most of the time, they usualy, were running on the back of the grid without scoring points, without much in terms of sponsors, and that eventually made them financially impossible to sustain, and eventually ended up being sold. Sauber and Jordan, were among the few that ever lasted for a very long time.

If there is a determination made that F1 is an anti-competitive cartel, the members themselves could be subject to sanctions, including tariffs on their exports to the US. i think it would fall under anticompetitive practices In the European Union, competition law promotes the maintenance of competition within the European Single Market by regulating anti-competitive conduct by companies to ensure that they do not create cartels and monopolies that would damage the interests of society. The EU has strict rules protecting free competition. Under these rules, certain practices are prohibited. If you infringe the EU's competition rules, you could end up being fined as much as 10% of your annual worldwide turnover.

@fabr5747

Impossible... The development of a car takes more than 1 year, so promoting or demoting doesn't make sense. Plus F2 teams don't want to go to F1. They are often partnering with F1 teams, sharing knowledge, and being used to train pilots to F1. There is no way for it to work. It's not like football where you just buy new players when in the new league. The needs for F1, the budget for F1 are not comparable. The team size is not the same. The F2 car is the same for all teams. So that means that they would have to build in 3 months a factory, a wind tunnel, models for developing F1 cars, hire thousands of experienced employees, and build the car. It makes no sense.

more so the teams are afraid of being unviable again financially like how over half of the grid used to be before costcap era. Hell Mclaren was about to go bankrupt and have to sell their F1 team and they are one of the most succesful teams in F1. So what the lower end F1 teams are afraid of is that if 11th team comes, their prize money and sponsors will lower and that then they can no longer be a part of F1. F1 in return is afraid if teams start going away their whole league is going to start losing money because who would watch Ferrari race against Red bull and Mercedes? And last time new teams joined they were under in just few years, without bringing anything to the sport.

As far as I can remember, in all the long history of Formula 1, the US Congress has never gotten directly involved in the sport. They fact that they are now asking questions on behalf on Andretti speaks volumes to how far F1 has come as a popular and accepted sport is the US. Obviously the fact that we now have three races, which Bernie had always wanted to make happen, reflects that awareness and acceptance too. As much as I cannot stand Jim Jordan, it’s nice to see him finally taking a stand on something relevant. Personally, I think the deeper reason for Andretti’s denial is routed in the fear of a potential US dominance of the sport. Liberty Media shocked the world when they bought the rights. Now there’s three US races on the calendar. Ford is coming back and now Andretti, a name that is synonymous with motorsports, and Cadillac are wanting to jump into the fray. Where will it end? Even Italy and the UK can’t get more than one or two races, if you count Imola as a second “Italian” GP. So yes, it’s about money and the delusion of the total prize pot, but it’s also about ego and trying to keep America from dominating the sport.

But as a possible new team nobody even F1 and Andretti know how they will match up against the current grid, that also applies to Audi in 2026. To throw an alternative viewpoint, would it be possible to enter a team into the NFL,NBA or MLB then if they are Pro Competition? I’d like to see Andretti in F1. I’ve always liked seeing new teams enter. Unfortunately they tend to be a bit shit. Pacific, Simtek, Forti, Lola. You wouldn’t want to be in that group.

There HAVE been expansions to those leagues in the past. Cities/potential owners have petitioned and have been let in... It doesn't ha[[pen often, and a lot of that is due to the financial requirements and the need for a city to be onboard. But compare this to say NASCAR or INDYCAr where pretty much anyone can show up and try to qualify and compete. Even thought NASCAR now has their whole franchise thing, that was mostly to give some value to the team owners, and even then there are a few non-franchise spots on the grid. F1 is basically a closed shop and locking out competition from showing up. They're afraid of losing their profit margins, and having only 3-4 teams that have a chance of winning and then filling out the rest of the grid with "no chancers" benefits those couple powerhouse teams, and even the no chancers aren't incentivized to let anyone else in without potentially losing what little revenue they have coming to them under the condord agreements. IMO, if they don't want to let an American team with American drivers and American engine manufacturers in to play, then they can do so WITHOUT American tracks, and American TV revenue, etc.... You want to lock us out? Fine, we can do the same. And they need the USA more than the USA needs F1... We have PLENTY of other equally interesting and technically advanced racing series here in the USA.

And those 2 are connected. Many Americans are crybabies who take this against the US... 1. There are new rules to be implemented, it's ridiculous to have a new team for the last year of this F1 car format. It's absurd, a waste of money. Why applying for 2025? 2. The F1 is finally a commercially viable sport for the teams. This gives them more means to get better, and improves the competition. 1 more team = dilution of the income, and it makes it less likely for small teams to be economically viable. Keeping F1 financially viable is important. Diluting the income will bring major issues when there will be an economic crash. So yes, the status quo is better for the sport. 3. Andretti can buy a team if they are serious ! But they want the cheap version.

So Andretti and Cadillac should build a complete car, put it on any or all F1 circuits and either prove it is competitive or not. Yeah, that's a lot of money but frankly money doesn't seem to be an issue for either Andretti or Cadillac. Since Cadillac already competes at the high end of auto racing it likely can build an engine that stands with the best there are in the current field. Would Dallara build the Andretti car? I don't know. It makes Indy cars. But it also builds Haas F1 cars which aren't exactly competitive even with a Ferrari engine. My point is simple: prove it can compete and F1's arguments become irrelevant. I think the only countries that consistently has three races are Italy and the U.S. There's alot of money to be found in the good old USA if F1 wants to tap into more deply by adding an Andretti/Cadillac car. And hasn't F1 had more than 10 teams in the past?

Yes, I believe that Andretti was excluded because the current teams are happy with the current order of things and are not interested in change. Implying that Andretti will be worse than Haas and Williams is silly. I suspect that the real truth is that they are afraid of what they might consider an unfair advantage Andretti has in that it will not be under the cost cap until it joins so, it can currently spend an unlimited amount of money to create a car and other infrastructure for the 2026 car which other teams cannot.

Because it looks like they want American money without a real contender American team. Sure, if they sign up and blow chunks. Ok. But with GMs serious support and Cadillacs good sports car racing history of the last 20 years. It should work out.

It’s not about being competitive, it’s about revenue! If I told any of the people advocating for Andretti to share their household income with me would they say yes, sure! Of course not! Then why should F1 reams want to loose money to accommodate Andretti? And it’s not about the USA because there is a USA team on the grid, it’s just not Andretti! And they suck by the way…. And the criticism is right, being on F1 far more benefits Andretti than they other way around.

Somebody tell these European team principals and those fellows at F1 that a US congressional investigation during election season, where many of those people's seats are on the line, is bad for their business, since thise senators and congressmen will do anything to make their names recognizable to their constituents, and being lawmakers, they can do anything within the bounds of law to make life miserable to their parent companies. An extreme version of the "chicken tax" law, wherein they can make a say, 200% tariff on Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari or Aston Martin or McLaren cars... they can do it! Force Stellantis and Daimler-Benz to drop their US divisions? They can. Ban F1 races in the US? Easy. These maybe extreme examples, but if I were them, don't underestimate these people, especially during election season, where their jobs are at the mercy of their constituents.
