In 2007, my daughter was watching a TV show called Jack's Big Music Show. A song got stuck in my head prompting me to look it up. Because of that, here I am 15 years later still enjoying Andrew Bird.

I had no idea that Andrew Bird video could be so divisive. "I am the most humble person you could ever meet and it's not easy to be like that when you've got everything perfect." Wow. That made my day.

Fascinating that a song can be so upbeat and catchy on the surface but have such dark lyrics. Basically that love doesn’t exist and is nothing more than a biological byproduct to promote cell division. The little flags touch on how that same biology leads to absurdities like war, social castes, nationalism, and evolution (“nature show that rages every day”). I love it. He even makes fun of his own violin playing when he compares it to the bug playing music with its leg (like crickets). Genius stuff.

I don't think the song means that science can prove love doesn't exist. I think it says that it's impossible to measure love with science. Love is a emotion, and emotions can't be measured objectively. Someone who is only able to perceive things that are measurable will think that love doesn't exist. Professor Pynchon is poor, because he is too set in his ways to ever open up to love, and so will never be able to experience it. If anything, it's a musical demonstration of confirmation bias. Professor Pynchon doesn't think love is real, and uses science to confirm his feeling; the tragedy being that love can't be quantified scientifically.

This is my favorite Andrew Bird song. And I love it. I consider his style to be a very creative and unique take on a lot of different things. And who can hate a whistler, really?

Andrew Bird is one of those amazing, visionary artists that would be pretty famous if the public knew or even cared about decent music. People may will look back at him years later as one of the great musicians of the decade, and most people who lived during his time will be embarrassed to say they'd never heard of him.

The best and most creative artists are without a doubt, those who shun the spotlight; Those who veer hard from the mainstream. In virtually every case where a forward-thinking, independent-minded artist accepted the tantalizing offers from the music moguls, to push, them into the public's eye, the artists' music suffered irreparably. So, I am completely satisfied that all of my favorite singers and musicians are virtually unknown to the world at large.

He's keeping busy Yeah he's bleeding stones With his machinations and his palindromes It was anything but hear the voice anything but hear the voice It was anything but hear the voice That says that we're all basically alone Poor Professor Pynchon had only good intentions When he put his Bunsen burners all away And turning to a playground in a Petri dish Where single cells would swing their fists At anything that looks like easy prey In this nature show that rages every day It was then he heard his intuition say We were all basically alone And despite what all his studies had shown That what's mistaken for closeness Is just a case for mitosis And why do some show no mercy While others are painfully shy Tell me doctor can you quantify He just wants to know the reason, the reason why Why do they congregate in groups of four Scatter like a billion spores And let the wind just carry them away? How can kids be so mean? Our famous doctor tried to glean As he went home at the end of the day In this nature show that rages every day It was then he heard his intuition say We were all basically alone Despite what all his studies had shown That what's mistaken for closeness Is just a case of mitosis Sure fatal doses of malcontent through osmosis And why do some show no mercy While others are painfully shy Tell me doctor, can you quantify? The reason why -source: atoz lyrics

Love the representation of soapberry bugs and their mate-guarding behavior. Perfect example of something that could be mistaken for closeness/love if one was unaware of the underlying genetic mechanisms of behavioral plasticity, which is also present in human beings. Makes perfect sense that the song after Imitosis in the Armchair Apocrypha album is called Plasticities which is then followed by Heretics. So clever, Mr. Bird.

@Nigelzanproductions I once drew a comic about how i 'saw' this song and got the chance to give it to him in person... he said i totally got the meaning of it. to me, andrew bird compares human interactions to science, stating that some people will just pick on anyone who seems weaker than them, and that what we would describe as feelings towards each other is nothing more than scientific reactions. all humans are basically alone in this life, no matter how much we feel like we have company :)

@cocoadog5 what's genius about it isn't the difficulty of the instruments themselves, it's the way they're artfully woven together. the flow of the violin, xylophone, guitar, etc. is brilliant. many other artists just think to put the obvious instruments where andrew bird puts innovation and creativity.
