I do think he might just struggle against Adam Driver, Will Smith and Andrew Garfield for one reason: although all 4 of them play real life people, the others can be verified to see how well they embodied their characters in a way Denzel cannot. As awesome as his performance may be, if any of the others gives the Oscar voters the feeling that they are looking at a ghost that pretty much ties it. That feeling got Bradley Cooper a nomination for his turn in American Sniper. In any other year he would have had much better chances. But that year he was up against the likes of Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking and Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing. Two very capable actors that also give the feeling of seeing a ghost. The other thing is that Denzel's performance in 'Macbeth' is very reminiscent of that given by Orson Welles. That's not Denzel's fault. There are very few ways to play a man on the verge of insanity. However, if the voters get the feeling of having seen this before, they might look elsewhere. The only thing with Will Smith's portrayal is that while he embodies Richard Williams, he doesn't quite look like him. Had Mahershala Ali turned in exactly the same performance, I would be more inclined to think he was going to win. All that said, I thought 1917 would win the Oscar for Best Picture so what do I know?

And years later, I got to see Ralph perform on stage in a production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was awesome. This is exactly why I love Andrew so much and why he is such a great person all around! Not only is he a great actor but he’s also just always himself and it’s crazy that someone as famous as him could even have something like this happen to him where a bunch of way lesser known actors show they’re grateful for him liking their work!? It’s incredible and he is just the absolute best 😭❤️❤️
