Andrew Garfield sat down with us at length to talk about Tick, Tick...BOOM!, Spiderman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and much more. Recorded Feb. 22, 2022 at 92nd Street Y.
Moderator Annette Insdorf interviews Andrew Garfield after a screening of tick, tick...Boom! Lin Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut was selected by the American Film Institute as one the 10 best films of the year and has earned Andrew an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jonathan Larson.
Andrew Garfield’s impressive filmography includes Boy A for which he won a BAFTA Award, The Social Network (2010) and playing Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). He was lauded for his performances as the conflicted protagonist in Ramin Bahrani’s 99 Homes (2014), and in Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge (2016) as a medic during World War II who is a conscientious objector, in which he received an Academy Award nomination. His versatility can be seen in Martin Scorsese’s Silence, Andy Serkis’ Breathe, and this year in The Eyes of Tammy Faye as televangelist Jim Bakker. Onstage, he has starred in Angels in America in which he won a Tony award as well as Death of a Salesman.

He's a good conversationalist. I like how Andrew takes pieces of the character he plays with him when doing press. He channels them without coming off as pretentious which I think is a skill only of experienced and passionate actors.

Andrew Garfield goes beyond being articulate and passionate, though he is both. He speaks in paragraphs you want to read. He sounds like a wise and impactful teacher and writer. He clearly isn't in this for mere applause; he steps on the audience's applause to get his ideas out, to find the right words to convey his ideas in just the right light. This is a man who is not only a brilliant, wonderful actor, but who will do things beyond acting, in the world. A book, a play, a screenplay, founding a theater, a school, a place for artists. I just feel in my bones, listening to him, that he has a great many more things to offer the world. We are lucky to have him. May he live long and prosper.

I have a birth defect and am a screenwriter. A friend also has an illness and a screenwriter. Her father is a doctor. When she told him she felt Inadequate to him because she was ‘just a screenwriter’ he told her ‘I save lives but you make them worth living’. It’s very important for me to remember when I feel ‘non essential’.

once again his words hit home. He has a remarkable way with words and is a beautiful human being. So much love and compassion to give to the world. I hope to meet him so I can properly thank him for his words on grief. I lost my twin to a car crash in 2020 and his words on grief get me through the really bad days and that means a lot to me.

Why was she wearing a mask the whole time? Like I've nothing against people who are fearful, but they are 12ft apart - if she's that paranoid about getting it, maybe just avoid a crowded theatre entirely?

She explained why at the beginning of the talk. Netflix asked her to, to protect Andrew because he had many engangements around that time and many awards shows to go to and they didn't want to jeopardize that. It was kind of her to do this to protect him.

@@nibncabc2737 You are welcome. Andrew did a lot of these talks as promotion for Tick Tick Boom!, which is a Netflix movie. So all the promo was sponsored by Netflix. They really wanted him to get out there, be visible and win those awards ;) He did another talk via Zoom right before this one, and another after it. He was working really hard to get the movie out there.
