Andrew Graham-Dixon is a great man. Watch all his stuff on the BBC, even when it's about something I didn't think I'd be interested in, I end up being interested. His series on American art for BBC is great.

Big Think is a very special channel with a lot of varied, interesting and thought-provoking topics covered by able and informed speakers. If you don't have any interest in the subject being discussed (or the speaker,) please move on and don't spam the comments section. It makes it much harder for others to engage in meaningful discussion, and you're dragging the whole channel down as a result.

To me, Caravaggio's life would make a good book/movie adaptation.

In addition to discovering Caravaggio, founding opera, and being the principle sponsor to Galileo, Cardinal Del Monte was reknown for his canned peaches in light syrup.

id suppose its easy to see why , as a standalone the paintings would not hav gone far, yet considering the sociological implications in a world wher that kind of thing was being phased as an active social life, being portrayed through art at the same time as having the connections to those higher up (which observe it), is porbably a major breakthrough in the basis of modern marketing
@1sueism113 жыл бұрын
@PyroTyger well put, thank you Pyro. here's a topic for meaningful discussion: It's always been interesting to me how intwined politics, religion and community status was, even back in Caravaggio's time - not sure anything has changed, except for the fact that the artist had to work for these elite and espouse their message outright. hmmm, mad marketing genius indeed . . .

Andrew Graham-Dixon is art. I read his bio on his website and there was nothing in his life that is not about art. I am inclined to believe, however, that he was selected by those in high places to be obsessively critical of rare art works and artists. He lacks a certain amount of humanism. Therefore, his interpretation of artwork and artists may not be the same as mine or yours and is therefore, just a peg in the criticism ladder.

Why can't people grasp the fact that intelligent people that can teach us a thing or two actually do exist besides Michio Kaku?

I tried to watch Kaku's physics of the impossible (lower case intentionally), it was piss compared to Carl Sagan's "Cosmos." He seems to assume too much about our future technologies, and most of his ideas seem hasty. Sagan was much more thoughtful, realistic and informative to the common man.

@NicoleNa666 Very well said. Oftentimes people who I deeply respect become some kind of icon where they are no longer seen for the intelligent person they are but rather some kind of God who people blindly worship. People somehow see it as a threat to great master Kaku's wisdom to show other intelligent human beings on this channel. It will be ok fangirls, Michio will be just as smart and awesome he always was despite other people being allowed to grace "his" channel.

DO look the related video at the left: Power of Art: Caravaggio. One of the best art documentaries I've ever seen! /watch?v=2HhbU5FoC-Y I also recommend the one about Bernini and David from the same series.

@cerealkilla4eva very bad wording on my part. i was just posting my opinion that when i see him speak there's just something about the way he comes across that is sort of patronising and unnecesary. and sometimes he dumbs down what he's talking about too much. but generally what he talks about is interesting.
